Goodreader keeps getting better

Since I bought it, I’ve been spending a lot of time inside Goodreader. If you dig into it, Goodreader is far more than a PDF viewer. In fact, I’ve been watching movies, listening to music and audiobooks, as well as browsing the web all within the same application.

First off, Goodreader uses the built in audio and video players than come with the iPad. Simply drag files to the app and it will play them. It doesn’t have quite the same playlist functions, but you can do wonders with folders.

You can take things a step further and use the built in browser to download files as you discover them. For example, you can jump over to Librivox and download an entire audiobook in zip format, unzip it using the built in compress tool, store it in a folder and then listen to each part as time permits.

Or another way that came up over the weekend, I found a site that had some nice images I wanted to use from my iPad. Well, they were bundled up in a zip file. This turned out to be no problem as I downloaded the archive and unzipped the images into a folder. I browsed for a picture I liked using the built-in slideshow and then assigned it as wallpaper. This is all done from within Goodreader which makes it extremely easy an convenient. I was quite excited to be able to download the archive and manage the whole thing without having to use my PC and connect my iPad to it. Nothing kills the thrill like finding something great then having to find another machine to make use of it.

I think the built in browser is an unsung gem of this app. As you click on links you are prompted if you want to download the link or follow it. It seems a little strange at first until you get to an image or file you want and then you tell the browser to download it and in the background it’s added to your Documents folder. You don’t have to wait for the download, you can keep browsing or select another file. That is an incredibly handy feature. Keep looking for stuff while it keeps downloading.

I’ve now downloaded books, a couple of movies, a few albums, some magazines and even some wallpaper into Goodreader. I’m loading all sorts of things into it so there will always be some entertainment at the ready. This app is turning out to be my most used application.

Even though the price went up to $1.99 this is still a must have app. It usability and feature set just keeps growing. It can easily replace a few of the other apps I bet you’re using.

If you’ve come as an elf, see it through as an elf.
