iOS4 is coming to town

It should be no surprise now that iOS4.2 is available for download. And while I’m sure there are lots of people all excited and giddy over the release I have to say I’m going to let this one sit for awhile before I upgrade. I’ll go ahead and update my iPod Touch since it already has 4.1 installed, but for now, I’m going to stick with iOS3 on the iPad.

I’ve seen the latest version working on the iPad and while the folders and task switching is useful it really doesn’t do anything for me. Unlike the iPod where I’ve installed every app I could get my hands on, I’ve been very selective about which apps stay on the iPad. In fact I’ve been pruning apps away and slowly scaling it down to only the most used programs. Many games have fallen to the wayside so folders really aren’t a big deal to me. My buddy has a single folder that houses all his apps so everything fits on one screen. Strangely, it looks like Windows 3.1…

The app switching and multitasking is interesting, but again, I don’t use my iPad that way. I work with one app, do what I want to do with it, then close it and move on to the next. I’m not using Facebook or Twitter so getting updates isn’t important. Switching from a game to a document isn’t something I do either. I guess I’m a single task kind of guy and it seems to be just fine for me. Plus, none of the apps really take that long to start so I don’t think I’m missing out on anything.

The universal Inbox is also neat, but again not that big a deal to me. I have multiple email addresses but I actually prefer to keep things separated. I really only get email at one address anyway so checking the other two is pretty infrequent. Plus it tells me if mail is there so click a second or third Inbox isn’t an inconvenience.

I’m sure it won’t be long before I have to upgrade to get some new feature of some new game or util, but for right now, my iPad is pretty damn perfect, I don’t see a reason to mess with it.
