Need for Speed Hot Pursuit – A Quick Review

So I’ve been playing NFS over the weekend and quick frankly I have some mixed feeling. Make no mistake, it’s a hell of a lot of fun. The graphics are good, it’s smooth and the tilt steering works well. The main problem is that the game is a little too short and a little too easy, at least to start.

The game is broken down into 4 stages with 6 events per stage. You can breeze through the first 3 stages without any problem at all. The bounty racks up like crazy and you’ll be switching cars after nearly every event. They are fun and somewhat challenging events, but you’ll be hitting 3 stars on your second run through.

But when you hit stage 4 everything changes; the game becomes ridiculously difficult. One of the tasks is to take down the Lamborghini. Strangely, this car seems to evade the Bugatti Veyron at every turn. It’s faster and is damn near indestructible. I’m pretty sure the Lambo can’t actually get away from the Bugatti in a straight line, but in this world it can, and does, every time. Further, its use of the jammer is just overwhelming and frustrating. If you do manage to get in front so you can use the spike strips, the Lambo will zip past you like you’re standing still so they don’t work. And don’t expect any help from the roadblock either. The cars line up so at leave a massive gap between them which everyone can just drive through and prove useless at stopping anything. It’s all quite frustrating actually.

It seems completely unbalanced to the previous 3 levels.

Another part that’s missing is that you can only play as the police. There is no option to jump in and run from the cops. While you do get to drive all the same cars this would be a fun element. Avoiding the spike strips, dodging roadblocks and doing wild J turns to make your getaway would be a lot of fun and double the game play.

Even with these faults, at $0.99 the game is a steal! It’s still several hours worth of entertainment and well worth that single dollar. However, there is no way to justify the original game price of $9.99. And, how can you justify in app purchases of Bounty? That really just makes no sense to me! I have really come to hate in-app purchases. It’s starting to look a lot like a scam. How about you just let me buy the damn app and stop harassing me?

Anyway, there is no excuse for not getting Hot Pursuit. It’s a lot of fun and you can’t argue with $0.99. I really have no idea why EA dropped the price so quickly on this new title. It’d been out for only a day or so before being slashed. But even with the flaws I still like it, even though it could be a lot better.
