iDos is back, but different

I’m both excited and disappointed about this. I thought the idea of iDos was fantastic; being able to play those old DOS games on the iPad. Ok, sure, there were some obvious legal issues there. And it probably didn’t help that someone went off half cocked and thumbed their nose at Apple by running Widows 3.1 on the iPad. But seriously, the idea is fantastic. I would love to be able to play the Ultima series on the iPad. I absolutely loved those games, especially Ultima III and IV and think they would be pretty kick ass on the iPad. Those old games seem to port really well over to the mobile platform. Too bad Electronic Arts isn’t taking the time to retool those assets for a new generation. It would be great to go hang out with Lord British again. And there are tons of other great games that would work just as well. Games like Myst and Riven seem to be well received and Monkey Island was a big hit from what I can tell.

iDos is back with limited functionality and only a few games, but maybe the idea will catch on and more companies will add their old games to the list. Or maybe it will inspire them to give them an update and less us have a true native version. Seriously, there are so many good games that could make a comeback.

But at any rate, iDos is free and includes some ready to play games like Wolfenstein 3D. Like I said, I hope this is the start of a new trend. Probably should go grab a copy before this version gets pulled from the shelves.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
