The Kindle Fire is En Route

Amazon announced they were shipping devices early and mine started its journey yesterday afternoon. I checked this morning and it’s on the truck out for delivery. I have no doubt it will be waiting for me when get home. That’s an impressive delivery time. To add to the excitement I have the next two days off so I will have plenty of uninterrupted playtime. I’ll get it fully charged tonight and sync it with my Amazon account. It will be interesting to see the layout of books on a true Kindle and the Kindle app on the iPad. I also get a free month of Amazon Prime so I’m very curious to see how it plays movies. Amazon keeps piling on features to the Prime offering so I think it will be hard to resist signing up for the upcoming year. Anyone else get a Kindle Fire? What do you think? Any comparisons to the iPad?

ZenWriter

BitsDuJour had this app called ZenWriter for sale for $6 today. I’ve never heard of it before and decided to have a look. I love playing with word processors. Much to my excitement it’s a damn nice editor. They’ve completely removed menus, formatting, fonts and just about everything else. What it does have though is this little UI that looks like it’s a page from a book. It has the title as the header and the date, time, word count and characters as the footer. You fill up everything in between. It also has these awesome full screen backgrounds that it makes semi-transparent. That makes it a really nice canvas to work on. To help with the writing process they’ve included these relaxing little sound loops that play in the background as well as little sounds that clack when you type. I really like the layout and the fun little environment it makes. I felt compelled to buy a copy. […]

ZenWriter – A bit of writing bliss

I just downloaded and bought ZenWriter from BitsDuJour. I’d never heard of this app before, but after using it for few minutes I knew I wanted it. I do a lot of writing, not just for this blog but in general. Normally I use Microsoft Word, which I enjoy immensely, but Word has gotten to the point of being so big and bloated that it almost gets in the way of writing. The grammar check and AutoCorrect as excellent, but it has so many features that no one ever uses and the menu system these days is just a labyrinth. I’m constanly looking for something else and I think I may have just found it. ZenWriter is a scaled down text editor that ditches formatting, menus, toolbars and just about everything and presents a simple writing space. But it makes that writing space extremely effective. The entire screen is a blank canvas so that you’re not staring and options […]

Crystal Head all done up in red

So here I am playing with my skull some more. This time my little buddy has suffered a bit of a head injury and may have some internal damage. I was having some fun with different lighting effects and really thing this bottle would look awesome if I could light it from the bottom. I know they make a lighted stand so obviously not the first one to think of this. I’ll either have to get one or fashion one of my own. I think there is some serious fun to be had by using different colors and lighting. You know, with Christmas coming up, I bet I can come up with something interesting to do involving red, green and white. Who’s with me on this one?

Frozen Crystal Head

It’s not always about beer, sometimes there’s vodka. Since I have these very exciting Crystal Head Vodka bottles to play around with I have been experimenting with how they look under different conditions. This is my frozen head of vodka right out of the freezer. I chilled this down for at least an hour and then put it on the table to see if it would frost up. With the humidity we have it took mere moments to turn into a true Crystal Skull and I had an amusing time taking pictures. With the frosted surface area you can really see the detail of the bottle. Check out those slightly crooked teeth and those wide cheekbones. The bottle is an awesome gimmick, but you can tell they put a ton of time and work into crafting it. I’m still quite a fan of this vodka and think it’s excellent when you chill it down and drink it straight. This smaller […]
