My machine has soiled it pantaloons

Ok, this is ridiculous. My Windows 7 machine has completely crapped itself and it seems hundreds of people have run into this problem. It boots just fine, but when it gets to the login screen, it goes black and there is no way to log in. You can see the cursor and move it around, but there is no way to get to a desktop. There is no way to get past it or get into the machine from Safe Mode. I’m not entirely sure how to fix this. Like I said, dozens of people have written about this and the solutions range from reformatting, to swapping out DLL’s, to disconnecting USB drives, to virus problems. Great, this should be fun to fix.

iPad cases and the Apple TV

Bought some cases and an Apple TV to go with my iPad. I bought one case, and then found another I would like to try. While I was messing around with Amazon I decided to go ahead and buy the Apple TV. The idea of playing games on the big screen is pretty appealing. Plus it plays Netflix and I can stream music and movies from the iPad directly to the TV. I figure for $99, it’s worth messing around with. I also picked up my renewal for NIS 2012 for less than $25 and managed to grab one of the Sandisk Cruzer 32GB thumbdrives for less than $25. It may be slow of the write speed, but toting around 32GB in your pocket isn’t a bad idea. I can’t keep filling up the iPad using AirDisk now can I? And I got a 10 port USB hub. All these damn external drives and taking up all my slots!

Wow, these new iPad cases suck!

Bought some cases for the iPad, I have to say, that’s the most disappointing thing about this new device – the cases suck! The original iPad case was just about perfect. It opened like a book to protect the screen, it completely enveloped the device so it wouldn’t slip out of your hand or get scratched, the material was easy to grip even playing those intense racing games, it had the neat flap that folded over the device and kept it snugly in place so it couldn’t slip out, and it gripped the glass face just enough to be secure, but still be out of the way. Can they make something that cool for the iPad 3? Hell no! They have those stupid SmartCover that don’t protect it at all, leave the back completely exposed and don’t provide any support or grip when holding it from the back. I bought some rubberized case which should protect it for the moment […]

I just got the iPad 3!!

I said I wasn’t going to get one, but somehow I managed to end up with an iPad 3. So far it’s been pretty cool, I like the voice dictation the speed is impressive and the graphics are pretty cool. In fact I’m writing this blog post without touching the keyboard. The only thing that annoys me is the fact that nobody makes a decent case for it. I bought two cases from Amazon and I don’t like either one of them. Why doesn’t anybody make the original iPad case in an iPad 3 format? I also bought the Apple TV so that I can play games on the big screen. Airplay is a little finicky at times but overall I think it’s pretty neat. I wanted to play Need for Speed but the connection speed was a little choppy. Apparently I need to check my network and stop people from downloading all sorts of crap. Oh wait, maybe that […]

VirtualBox Cannot register the image because UUID already exists

I’ve ran into a snag with VirtualBox. I made some images on my work laptop and when I try to load them on my home desktop machine I run into the following error: Cannot register the image ‘C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso’ with UUID ‘{4a16c3ed-691e-4878-9576-d1113bc5a699}’ because a ‘C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso’ with UUID {…} already exists It turns out the Guest Additions ISO is loaded for one of the images, but I have no idea which one since UUIDs mean nothing to me. Basically, the Virtual Machine won’t load and there doesn’t seem to be a whole you can do about it from the UI. After doing some digging I believe I have a way to get around the problem quite easily. Go into the directory where the Virtual Machine file is located and open the .VBOX file. It’s an XML and is easily read by an editor such as Notepad++. Look for the line: <HardDisk uuid="{4a16c3ed-691e-4878-9576-d1113bc5a699}" location="Windows 2008.vdi" format="VDI" type="Normal"/> as in this example: […]
