Isn’t it Microsoft who’s playing catch up?

So Microsoft says it’s not playing catch up to Apple when it comes to the mobile space and giving away iWorks is a sign of desperation. And Microsoft feels that since you can use memory cards for a Surface that it’s the superior device.

Well hang on now. Microsoft may be giving away it’s Office suite with the Surface, but considering it’s not been built as a touch application that really isn’t saying much. Plus, Apple is giving away iWorks for the desktop, not just the tablet. Additionally, have you ever seen anyone use applications on the Surface without the connected keyboard and mouse? Awkward!

I don’t disagree for a moment that Pages and iWorks are used by a much smaller audience than Office, but, when you start giving away an OS for free and you give away a complete productivity suite that’s not a crippled piece of code like Works, and it integrates mobile and desktop machines, you’ll get people to pay attention. Yes, Office is free on Surface, but it sure as hell isn’t free on the desktop.

The iPad may have started out as a consumption device, but it’s role is changing very quickly. It’s becoming pretty adept at business tasks. It may not get everything right in the Enterprise space, but it’s forged many an inroad. The Surface is supposedly built for the Enterprise and it’s sales are struggling. There are far more Kindle Fire tablets out there than Surface tablets.

And let’s keep two things in mind:

Who’s sold more tablets?
Which company is worth more?
