Say Goodbye to Winamp. Aol pulls the plug on the venerable media player

Sadly, the days of Winamp are numbered and it won’t see the light of the New Year. Aol had decided that after 15 years it’s just not worth the effort anymore. I truly hope you aren’t asking what Winamp is, but in case you are, it’s arguably the best MP3 out there. In fact, it was one of the original ones and ultimately got consumed by Aol. It brought plugins, virtualizers and even skinning to the world of music and apps.

I remember using the original versions and still have it installed today. If I’m listening to music, Winamp is playing it. It’s disappointing to see the life of such a cool program come to an end. It was also one of the best ways to listen to Shoutcast and tune in to thousands of Internet based radio stations.

Maybe there is still time for someone to come along and pick up the code. I won’t say Aol has done a bad job with Winamp, but I don’t think their heart’s in it. Maybe they will be kind and hand over the code so it can live on as an Open Source project.
