Besiege – medieval siege engines to lay waste to immense fortresses and peaceful hamlets

image So I found this on Steam last night and jumped at the chance to get a copy. Seriously, who doesn’t want to build siege weapons and lay waste to buildings and troops? You had me at medieval siege engine.

(As an aside, the Ballista, Trebuchet, and Siege Engine were my favorite parts of Age of Empires)

Besiege is a physics based building game in which you construct medieval siege engines and lay waste to immense fortresses and peaceful hamlets. Build a machine which can crush windmills, wipe out battalions of brave soldiers and transport valuable resources, defending your creation against cannons, archers and whatever else the desperate enemies have at their disposal.

I was only able to give this a quick once over, but it was wickedly good fun. As stated, the goal is make siege weapons to take out troops and towers. The first couple of levels are simply driving your machine into a building and knocking it over. Anyone can drive in a straight line and hit a target right? However, you will quickly have to master steering and other mechanics as things get complicated. And let’s not forget there are plenty of sheep barring your way. Silly little animals seem to find themselves under my wheels far too often.

The third level was quite a feat as I tried to steer between land mines and not only did I blow my siege engine all to hell, I set both the forest and the sheep on fire, but who knows in which order. I just remember the sheep running and trees catching on fire behind them.

I clearly need more time with this game, but so far it’s most impressive. The graphics are simple, but they look good. The siege engine is easy to construct but hard to master. You get wood blocks for the frame, wheels, cogs, pistons, steering, suspension, armor, and plenty of weapons such as spiked balls and flamethrowers. From this toolbox, it’s time to get creative and build some weapons of medieval destruction.

Besiege is Early Access so don’t expect a complete game with hundreds of levels. The first "map" is done and it looks pretty good. I’m sure the lads at Spiderling Studios are back in the lab dreaming up all sorts of new levels and dastardly puzzles as we speak. The core of the game is looking really good so I’m sure a lot more content will be coming soon.

And since it’s only $7, I could hardly say no. I’m looking forward to seeing what else these guys come up with. Check it out and have some fun!
