Windows immediately comes out of sleep mode

Out of nowhere I started having problems with my machine staying in Sleep Mode. I would select the Sleep button, the machine would power down, then immediately start right back up even though I hadn’t touched the keyboard or clicked the mouse. It hasn’t had this sort of problem before, so what the devil is wrong? I started searching and found all sorts of wild ideas to try such as turning off the Power Management for the keyboard, mouse and network card. Those, sound like reasonable ideas, but the likelihood of that being the real culprit is slim to none. One thing I did learn was a neat command called: powercfg -lastwake Once the machine goes to sleep and then wakes again, you run that command to note what device caused the machine to wake up. Alright, now we’re getting somewhere. Some solid troubleshooting not just randomly clicking power management buttons. Here’s the output of what I got: C:\Users\>powercfg -lastwake […]

How to play Blu-Ray discs with VLC Media Player

On my main machine I have a Blu-Ray player and use VLC Media Player to play the discs. It’s been working quite well and I recently purchased another Blu-Ray player for a secondary machine. Much to my surprise and gnashing of teeth, VLC would not play Blu-Ray discs. What the devil goes on here? Why isn’t this working? I thought VLC handled Blu-Ray discs? Well, yes and no. It can indeed play them, but it may have an issue with the encoding mechanism used. There is an option to play the Blu-Ray disc right in the menu, but it might not always work. My primary machine works with each disc I insert because I have AnyDVD HD on it and that handles all the decoding. Now I could just install AnyDVD HD on the other machine, but it’s used for gaming and I don’t want to load anything I don’t have to. I turned my attentions to the Internet and […]

Betrayer – A First Person Action Adventure with Ghosts, Skeletons and quite possibly, the Undead

Betrayer has been out for awhile, but it’s on sale at Steam for $3.99 and from the trailer it quickly got my interest. Just what sort of game is this? It’s the 17th century, no one is around, you’ve been abandoned and something terrible has happened. As I started playing, I found this to be one of the most unusual games in my collection. I’m not normally a survival game fan, but I kinda like this. To start with you’re at the edge of the water with several containers around and a ship leaving in the distance. I sat there for a couple of minutes waiting for a tutorial that never started. Oh I see, I have to figure this out myself. All right, challenge accepted. With few options available, I smashed the available crates and grabbed some coins and other items. Since the water was behind me, there was no where else to go but up the hillside. Without […]

Dockside Warehouse Limited Time Building (LTB) – Building Payout and Upgrade Cost – Crime City

It’s time for another LTB and if you were paying attention you were able to get a massive headstart on this one. Gree messed up and put the building in the Store several days ago so I already have 2 of these built with one already at level 6. I checked my inventory and I do indeed have 6 of the Smuggler’s Vans that are given out as a prize. I thought this was just a new building they added so I went ahead and started. I should have known something was a little screwy based on the stats. What we have is the Dockside Warehouse which has a collection time of 16 hours. Yes, it’s already got people distressed over the collection time. The initial cost is $116 million with a base output of $859,259. To be honest, it’s not a bad building. I already have some 16 hour buildings so the time doesn’t bother me. But this rascal […]

Power Strip Adapters so I can finally plug all my external hard drives into one power strip

I’m not the only one with this problem. You buy multiple drives but because they all these massive power supplies and wall warts the damn things won’t all fit into the same UPS device. No matter how you twist or arrange them, it just doesn’t work. I have a 12 outlet device that can only hold a couple drives because the stupid plus are so big. But I just found a solution to the problem. I don’t know why I didn’t find it sooner. While checking on Amazon I found a set of 10 little extension chords. They are a mere 12 inches long and don’t look that exciting at all, but they are exactly what I need! They are 3 prong, UL listed cables that give you just enough length to plug in the drive and let it drape down the side of the UPS. I’ve been looking at all sorts of different UPS designs because I didn’t know […]
