Software to buy for 2021

Along with a host of adjectives, 2021 will be a big year for productivity and efficiency. From creating templates, to better note taking, to better organization, to increased use of macros and shortcuts. I've did a lot of this for 2020, and it worked out well. I will continue the trend, especially since we will continue to be 100% remote through 2021. Perhaps permanently remote.

I have no issue with that, it only means improving my process and workflow. I have an excellent toolset, now I want to focus on my usage to get the most out of them.

First step in organization and productivity? Get a Mac. There are simply better software choices available. There isn't one calendaring app, ToDo app, note taking, word processor, or document manager.

Each offering comes with different features to suit different kinds of users with different kinds of workflows. There is no one size fits all solution, so there shouldn't be a single software package.

If you are just coming to the world of Mac, it's a great time to get some Apple Silicon. My personal choice would be the Mac mini. It's a solid choice of power and features. I love the MacBook series, only not as my main or only machine. Although a Mac min and a MacBook Air combination would make for a fantastic home office. I have those, albeit older models. My MacBook Air is still awesome for me.

Coupled with that, here are some software packages I would highly recommend looking at to boost your workflow in 2021. I've had great success with these.

  • DevonThink Office Pro/Curio
  • Scrivener/Storyist/Ulysses
  • TaskPaper/OmniOutliner
  • Alfred
  • Keyboard Maestro
  • TextSoap
  • CopyLess
  • TypeIt4Me/Rocket Typist/Atext
    • If you buy Alfred, you actually get bundled functionality similar to TypeIt4Me and CopyLess
  • 2Do/BusyCal/OmniFocus
  • Mini Note

These aren't the only tools though. The point being, they bring organization to your workflow. When working remotely, this is pivotal. They help you focus, make you efficient, keep you organized, on track, and provide the ability to reduce repetitive tasks to a keyword. When you put it all together, work will be more efficient. When it's more efficient, it will be easier. When it's easier, you will enjoy it and finish faster. This means you can get away from the computer sooner.

All these tools played an instrumental part of my success for 2020. 2021 will still have problems. The challenges of today won't be gone for months to come. Yet, with the right tools you can improve, stay on target and hit your goals. There is lots of software and support out there to make it happen.

This space for rent.
