🛑 AdGuard on Every Machine

First order of business when setting up my 2013 Mac Pro was to install AdGuard – ad blocker and VPN. Pretty sure that makes only one unprotected query for the new machine. No need to download other apps until I mask my activity from prying eyes. I have the plugin for every browser, as well as the full desktop version. You can get the AdGuard Lifetime license for dirt cheap from places like StackSocial. The browser plugin works for my instances of Firefox and Waterfox. I beefed up that protection with the desktop version to cover browser capable apps such as DevonThink Office Pro, DevonAgent, Downie, and others. This means ads are blocked in apps that have their own browser, or use some form of Webkit. For example, I use DevonThink Office Pro as my news reader. It gathers articles from dozens of RSS feeds. I can also use it to browse a site and follow links. Normally, DevonThink Office […]

AdGuard or AdGuard Pro for iPad?

Since AdGuard is so beneficial for the Mac, I decided to install it for the iPad. That’s when I ran into a small dilemma. What’s the difference between AdGuard and AdGuard Pro? Short answer, nothing. They are the same app. It takes a little bit of digging on the AdGuard site, but they confirm the two apps are the same, with the same code base, and will be updated together. The difference lies in AdGuard Pro is a stand alone purchase, and is slightly cheaper for the time being. AdGuard is free to install and can be activated using a license key. This is the version to install if you bought the AdGuard family bundle. You can enter the product key or your account credentials to activate it.

Random IP Address from Keyboard Maestro into AdGuard

The first question you may ask is, why?To retort, why not? AdGuard for Mac is the best Ad/Tracker blocker I’ve used. Among it’s great features is the ability to send a bogus IP address to servers. This helps to obscure your location. It throws of advertising and tracking data. While not foolproof, it works well enough that I have it turned on and change my IP address on a regular basis. To that end, I made an amusing Keyboard Maestro macro to generate a random IP for somewhere in the world and copy it to the clipboard. All I have to do is paste it into AdGuard and let the confusion ensue. I could type a random address or increment one of the octets, but where’s the fun in that? This is a job for Keyboard Maestro. The macro has 3 parts. It picks the first octet using the RAND function. Since there are reserved addresses, if it happens to […]
