Notebooks for iPad, Windows and Mac – Good apps, Nice discount

So, back at the end of 2010, I got a newcomer notetaking app called Notebooks for iPad. I was desperately looking for something that came close to the power and usability of OneNote, which is still my favorite writing app. Notebooks for iPad turned out to be a great find and not only do I still have it installed, I still use it on a regular basis. While I still think OneNote is the unsung hero of the Office Suite, there are some issues. It’s only been recently that Microsoft has done any serious work on OneNote for iPad and even then, it’s not exactly thrilling. Also, OneNote has only recently broken free from Office and not can you easily get it standalone, but it’s now free. While this is excellent news, the .One format isn’t exactly the easiest thing to work with. Only OneNote can read it. It’s not like a .Doc file that anything more powerful than Notepad […]

AirDisk Pro and Notability – Now that works nicely

I had a great time transferring files over to AirDisk Pro last night. I sent over a couple Top Gear episodes and a bunch of PDF files. The Top Gear episodes played fine and copying them over that easily was pretty cool. But once I had the PDF files in AirDisk Pro I opened them up in Notability, which is a new note taking and PDF reading/annotating app I just bought. Notability lets you write notes using the keyboard as well as through handwriting. You can jot down ideas and sketch out pictures. That part alone is pretty sweet. But you can also load up PDF files. You can highlight text, write in the margins, add your own text using the keyboard and mark it up as you see fit. I loaded up a 500+ page PDF and found reading and highlighting to be very easy. You can hide away the menus and there is a great palm rest feature that […]

Notes N More – A Review

In this third, and more than likely final, article about note taking apps, I wanted to revisit Notes N More which I bought several months ago and think is a very good app, especially for the iPad. Notes N More is a universal app, which we don’t see enough of, and has some excellent features when used on the iPad. It uses the space to make a simple but effective layout. You get a sidebar to the left where you can see your categories, jump to one of your recent notes, create a task or use the calendar to jump to notes you took on a specific day. And to the right is the main window where you can see your notes associated with the category you selected. Unlike a lot of note taking apps, Notes N More allows you to create a folder or rather a main category and assign that category to your notes so you can group […]

Chapters – Notebooks for Writing – A Review

If you’re looking for a simple, but effective way to take notes for your class or during business meetings, track your travel plans or document your workout, Chapters is definitely worth looking into. In my quest for a good note taking tool I purchased, Chapters – Notebooks for Writing which is also another excellent app, but with a different presentation style. Chapters uses more of a Journal style for note taking. Along the left is a list of entries in chronological order. In the main window is the actual note itself. This is a style that seems to lend itself to people who are taking notes for a class or business meetings. It has a nice layout, but I wish the writing area was a little larger. Sort of looks like a sheet of paper in a typewriter. It’s not bad, I just like a little more room to work. I can certainly see how it would be useful to […]

Notebooks for iPad – A Review

If you need a full featured note taking app that let’s you create multiple folders and syncs with Dropbox, Notebooks for iPad is what you need to get. As you know, I’m a huge fan of OneNote. In fact, I think it’s one of the best products Microsoft has produced. I started working with OneNote 2003 and thought it was really good. There were a lot of features I wanted, and those got rolled up into 2007. Right now, I use OneNote daily and have hundreds of notes across dozens of folders for multiple projects. I truly think I would be lost without it. When I got the iPad, the first thing I wanted was a OneNote clone that I could work with. Sadly, finding such an app has been a lot harder than you might think. Several apps have come close, but there always seems to be something lacking, like Dropbox support, or making folders, or export functionality. But […]
