Out of OneNote and into Notebooks with Scrivner

Since we’re in the final days of the year, the tradition is to get rid of the old and bring in the new. One of the things I plan to do for the new year is move all of my writing from OneNote over to Notebooks and Scrivener. That is a big change for me as I’ve been using OneNote for nearly 5 years now. So why move away from it? – I’m still using OneNote 2007 because I simply can’t stand the UI of the more recent versions – The file format doesn’t translate well from Windows to Mac to iOS – OneNote has almost nonexistent export functions – OneNote doesn’t integrate with anything – While OneNote may be free, Microsoft is trying too damn hard to tie it to their cloud services and I simply can’t trust that – UI aside, it’s becoming bloated with useless features giving it a huge footprint For the future, I’ve decided to […]

RightNote on sale for 50% regular price. RightNote Professional – $29.97

RightNote includes different types of notes to store different types of information. There’s a word processing note for textual information, a spreadsheet note for accounting info or any type of list, a source code note for source code snippets, and a webpage note to save webpages for future reference and offline viewing . All your notes are stored in a hierarchical tree outline and can easily be moved around and re-organized at a later point. Folder notes and the unique folder tree allow you to view your outline at a higher level and make even large trees manageable. I’ve been waiting for RightNote to go on sale and today is the day. Yes, I do indeed have OneNote and I even have AllMyNotes, so why would I want RightNote? I use AllMyNotes while in the office to handle customer issues. I use OneNote like a Wikipedia to store all my issues and resolutions. I use OneNote at home to write […]

I don’t know anything about this app except it works like and sync with OneNote. That for me is worth the $0.99 price tag. It has the tabs and sections like OneNote and works with 2007 and 2010. It can read 2003 files as well. I’ll be giving this a through once over, but right now the price has dropped from $14.99 to $0.99 for Black Friday, so you better jump! Dropbox + OneNote = Awesome

While I think Windows 7 is a complete blunder from top to bottom, products like Microsoft OneNote show that Microsoft is capable of writing great apps when they put their minds to it. About two years ago I finally gave OneNote 2003 a try as a way to organize notes and write down all those ideas, links and projects I needed to keep track of. I was using Notepad++ with dozens of tabs open. It was working pretty well, but OneNote came in and just made everything so much easier. OneNote 2003 is great and OneNote 2007 is amazingly better. I use 2007 everyday at work and am a huge fan. I even write all my blog posts in it now. I can’t remember the last time I used Word. Dropbox is also an awesome sync tool which lets me sync files across the web and across multiple machines without even thinking. Just drop a file in there and now […]
