Offering up some kind words in Kind Words

When Kind Words showed up as a Steam recommendation, I thought it was a variant on Scrabble or Boggle. It’s not a word game, maybe not even a “game,” but a platform to share thoughts, feelings, and fears and say something nice and supportive to people you’ve never met. Kind Words is about saying kind words and hopefully make a small difference in someone’s life. Here’s the premise: Kind Words is a “game” where you anonymously “Write a Request.” You write down what you’re thinking, feeling, or experiencing in that moment, whether it’s positive or negative. You then put that message into a digital bottle and throw it out into the world. A kind, but equally anonymous stranger will reply back with some words of encouragement, a piece of advice, or simply an acknowledgment of what you’re going through. And maybe that’s all you need, to be heard and acknowledged. On the other side, you can “Read Requests.” For that, […]

The glorious Dorfromantik

It took a few plays to understand the “quest” aspect of Dorfromantik. The numbers that appear above some of the tiles, mean to “connect” similar tiles to achieve that goal. Such as, link together forest tiles to connect 150 trees. Place fields tiles so you string together 10 farms. Make a neighborhood of 50 houses. Now that I understand, I’ve moved past struggling to hit 1,000 to closing in on 10,000 points. I should have paid attention to the tutorial a touch more. Anyway, Dorfromantik is as wonderful as I had hoped it would be. The tiles make me think of Carcassonne. The art style is like TownScaper. The scoring and quests are like Islanders. Combined they make for a wonderful atmosphere. The Quests are fun little goals that add a dash of strategy. They make you think twice before placing a tile and cutting yourself off. Yet, they don’t get in the way of having fun. There is no […]

Dorfromantik releases on Steam

Today is the Early Access release of Dorfromantik, a game I’ve been watching for several weeks now. To me, it’s a combination of TownScaper with a dash of Islanders. I saw Raptor play this, yet didn’t realize there was a demo on GOG. I could have been playing it all along! Curse the bad luck! Well, the wait is over. Dorfromantik is available today and comes in at under $10, with another discount for launch. Dorfromantik is a city builder that you have to plan based on the tiles drawn. With that, you try to place tiles to achieve the highest score. There are some mini quests to give incentives. Increase your scores to unlock new tiles. When it’s all put together you can watch the train and the boats go by. A Creative Mode is coming soon which will lead to some amazing works of art. For launch day, the devs are giving away Steam keys in the chat. […]

How to Block games by Title and Tag on Steam

The simple goal is to block certain types of games from being displayed on the Steam store front page and from the Discovery Queue. To be honest, I’m tired of the Anime genre that pops up some very suspect titles. There are 2 ways to block games – by title and by tag. Most people are familiar how to block a title. Once the title is selected, click Not Interested underneath the window and it will no longer come up. Additionally, you can block by Tag in the Discovery Queue. Once in the queue, click the Customize link and exclude the Tag, in this case Anime, from the list. To block games from the main store front, hover the mouse over the game title graphic and in the right hand corner of the image you should see two downward pointing arrows or chevrons. Click this and select Preferences. You can then block a Tag, again Anime, and Save the preferences. […]

Ember – An RPG that pays tribute to games like Ultima and Diablo

They say time is relative to the developer. And it was about a year ago when I first read news of new RPG being created that would be heavily influence by Ultima and Diablo. Oddly, it was intended to be a mobile game and available at the end of 2015. Well, that kinda, sorta, never really happened. Instead, the game was built for the desktop and it now available on Steam. However, it does an impressive job of keeping a price of a mobile game and is $9.99. And this is not some Flash based game, this rascal is a hefty 4GB download. I hadn’t been tracking the release, so it coming to Steam was a complete surprise. Nevertheless, I immediately bought a copy. And after playing for a few hours, it’s an impressive game that does play like an Ultima from the days of old. In typical style, I looted crypts and rifled through the pockets on my slain […]
