Oh yes, I want an iPad

I admit freely, I want an iPad. And not because of some lemming factor or Apple fanboy love. Simply put, I think my iPod Touch is incredibly useful and handy and a bigger version just appeals to me. Reading full sized books, writing blog posts, checking out web pages and playing games on a screen that big sounds great! Unfortunately, the $700 price tag (for a 64GB model) is just too damn high a price for me to pay. For comparison, my Dell Inspiron laptop was only $450. The two machines aren’t quite the same thing, but alas it’s hard to justify that kind of money for something that doesn’t give me the same feature set. But I still want it!

And clearly I’m not the only one. From the articles I’m seeing pre-orders may be as high at 50,000 units so far. By the end of the day, and certainly by the end of the weekend, I wouldn’t be surprised if that number is much closer to the 300,000 units that may actually be available. Could Apple really sell out over the weekend? Damn right they could. I have no doubt.

If the rumors are true and there is multi-tasking in iPhone OS 4.0, and I have believed there would be ever since the iPad was announced, a lot of the arguments against the iPad will be quelled. I think my Touch is great and I would jump at the chance to get the iPad. Only the price keeps me away. If I could get the 64GB model at a price closer to $450-500, it would be mine.

Now of course we’ll have to see what HP and their Slate and MS with their Courier have to offer, but since those are still quite a ways off the iPad has my full attention.

It's bad luck to be superstitious.
