Damn! Bad week for MS, the Slate is dead too!

Looks like my idea of Microsoft cozying up to HP to work on the Slate isn’t going to happen. Microsoft has been kicked to the curb and with the acquisition of Palm, HP is more interested in making the webOS the powerhouse behind and future tablets. HP was very blunt on where it goes from here, saying it plans on "doubling down on webOS," meaning we could very well be looking at a webOS-based tablet in the near future. Do you get the feeling Microsoft has been left holding the bag here? They have a tablet OS nobody wants. The tablet market is going to keep growing and Microsoft is going to be on the outside looking in. Ouch! If Dell gives MS the snub and chooses Google for their tablets then Microsoft will be totally locked out of the market. Microsoft dumps the Courier

Rumors are surfacing that Microsoft has called it quits on their much hyped but completely vaporware Courier tablet. While this is surprising, it’s not really surprising. While MS has been touting the device and their touch technology for months they’ve yet to make any progress in bringing the device to market. They’ve never announced a deadline, never set a beta cycle and never showed off anything more than hopes and dreams on what a tablet by Microsoft might look like if they ever got one out the door. Microsoft dropping the ball and dropping the project really shouldn’t come as big news. Microsoft has been mismanaging touch technology and tablets since 2000. They were completely alone in the Tablet PC market yet couldn’t get anyone to come on board. Try as they might no tablet like device produced or controlled by Microsoft ever took the market by storm. Even Surface, their latest foray into this realm is hardly noticeable in […]

Layin some pipe!

It all started when I was looking for Candy Wars the other day. I have been jonesing for the ever popular Dope Wars but since that’s not allowed in the iPhone world, Candy Wars is what you have to get. So I grabbed Candy Wars (with the intent of renaming all the candy back to the regular dope names) which then lead me to get Prohibition 1: Bootlegger. And then as I was checking out the similar games (apparently I had dreams and aspirations of being a drug running, bootlegging tycoon) I happened on Oil Tycoon. Despite what the name might imply it’s not a sim, but rather a “Pipe Mania” or “Pipe Dreams” style game. Since getting Gold Rush and Railroad Puzzle I’ve been really interested in this style of game again so Oil Tycoon struck a chord with me. Plus with a price tag of Free, I was immediately downloading it. Much to my surprise there is an […]

Pipes by Michael Kerley – Free

I was literally looking to buy this game last night at $0.99 and now today the full version is available for free. I’ve renewed my interest in the "Pipe Mania" style games so this is excellent timing! Rotate the pipe segments to connect all the pieces. Easy to learn and very addictive. Gameplay video: http://tinyurl.com/pipes11 (goes to Youtube.com) Features: – Randomly generated puzzles – never the same game twice – Multiple board sizes ranging from "Training Wheels" (4×4) to "Mega Insane" (56×70) – Wraparound option (also known as "without walls" or "endless") – "One color" option – when enabled, all pipes are blue, making it harder to tell which ones are connected – Piece locking feature to help with large boards – Zoom and scroll using familiar iPhone/iPod Touch gestures – Auto save and resume – never lose your place, even if someone calls in the middle of your game – Timer (can be disabled if you want a more […]

Yet another reason to dislike Windows 7

So here’s the scenario: I needed to play a DVD on a Netbook that runs Windows 7. Now before you get all uppity and justify why this can’t be done or shouldn’t be done, let me explain that I understand the limitations as far as processing power and graphics. No, a Netbook doesn’t have a DVD player so you shouldn’t be able to play DVDs. But I can still load ISO images into it. But anyway, using CloneDVD and AnyDVD I made a copy of the disc and using VirtualCloneDrive mounted the ISO image into Windows. However, I was stymied by the Windows 7 error that no DVD playback codec was installed. Really? You couldn’t include the damn playback codecs in the Starter Edition? And it seems I’m not the only one who wants to play a DVD on a Netbook. As soon as you do a Google search multiple articles come up, but they all have the same answer. […]
