The fervor of the iPhone 4

Now that excitement and fervor over the new iPhone has settled I have a few thoughts of my own. Basically, it’s a nice upgrade, but is it revolutionary?

To start with, the Gyroscope is cool, but I’m not sure the practical use of it.

The Retina Display is neat, but any increase in DPI is a good thing. And is 300 DPI really the limit for a digital image? 800:1 contrast seems pretty good, but in reality, it’s really not that high.

The camera is a nice upgrade, but again, nothing major. While a phone camera really doesn’t need 15, 12 or even 8 megapixels in it, if the optics are high quality the image will be excellent. Considering the pictures being shot here are meant for Twitte, Facebook and blogs, this is plenty. I don’t think Apple actually mentioned who’s making the optics for them though.

Shooting HD video is cool, but again, lots of other devices can do that. Even SLR cameras can do it now. Again, cool upgrade, but not exactly "out in front" if you know what I mean.

When you bundle all the features Jobs talked about it makes for a very nice package, however, it really doesn’t come down on the revolutionary side and puts the iPhone back on a level playing field with everyone else. Many of the features Apple is showcasing have been around for awhile and are currently in multiple devices. It’s a good refresh; however, I don’t think it necessarily puts them in front of everyone. I think what we might be seeing here is the start of a plateau for the iPhone. Seriously, what more can you stick in that device?
