Four Feet of Flat Panel Goodness
If you recall a few months ago I wrote about a new machine I put together, an 8-core colossus with 32GB of ram and several terabytes of hard drive space. It’s a beauty of a machine, but there was one slight problem. The monitors weren’t on par with my new creation. Problem was, there was nothing wrong with the monitors, so I couldn’t in good conscience just throw them away. They weren’t great, but they would last until the end of the year.
Well, that’s what I thought anyway. Alas, the years caught up with them and they began showing signs of fatigue. One monitor began to turn off at random intervals and then the other began to lose pixels. Not just a random, but one vertical line after the other. While Red and Green are festive for the Holiday season, they are quite distracting when it comes to monitors.
The decline was rapid and they had to be replaced. As good fortune would have it, BestBuy put a slew of their monitors on sale. This gave me a grand opportunity to update everything. As you may expect, I decided to go big. I’m used to multiple monitors and even if my new choice was large I was still getting two.
Low and behold I got two of the Samsung s27C750’s. These are 27 inch flat panels with dual HDMI ports and a single VGA port. They’re wafer thing and have a massive viewing area. Some would say moving from two 19 inch 4:3 screens to a single 27 inch widescreen would be sufficient. To them I say, you’re just not trying.
So now I have two of these rascals side by side and of my goodness that is a big field of view. It takes some scrolling to get from one side to the other. But besides landscape mode, these monitors pivot on their stand and go into portrait mode. this means you can see the entire page inside Word, 83 rows inside Excel, or an entire web page on a single screen without scrolling. That makes for a hell of a computing experience!
It also makes for some impressive TV and movie watching. I’m tempted to hook up my Apple TV to one of them and see what my iPad looks like on it. I bet Crime City will look ridiculous!
