Time for Steam to clean up Early Access

Since there are so many titles up for sale during the Steam Summer Sale, it’s hard not to be exposed to a slew of new titles. However, it also exposes some serious flaws with Early Access. There are a lot of titles still in Early Access that haven’t been updated in a couple of years with hundreds (or more) negative reviews saying the game has been abandoned and not to waste your money. And it’s not just one or two titles, I’ve seen dozens. I think Kickstarter and Steam Early Access are a fantastic platform to let Indie developers get their games into player hands without having to go through the corporate BS that kills off so many titles. Think of how many studios Microsoft and Electronic Arts have scuttled and you’ll get my point. However, it’s becoming clear that Early Access is a dumping ground for get rich quick schemes and half-baked games where developers are hoping they’ll get […]

Besiege – medieval siege engines to lay waste to immense fortresses and peaceful hamlets

So I found this on Steam last night and jumped at the chance to get a copy. Seriously, who doesn’t want to build siege weapons and lay waste to buildings and troops? You had me at medieval siege engine. (As an aside, the Ballista, Trebuchet, and Siege Engine were my favorite parts of Age of Empires) Besiege is a physics based building game in which you construct medieval siege engines and lay waste to immense fortresses and peaceful hamlets. Build a machine which can crush windmills, wipe out battalions of brave soldiers and transport valuable resources, defending your creation against cannons, archers and whatever else the desperate enemies have at their disposal. I was only able to give this a quick once over, but it was wickedly good fun. As stated, the goal is make siege weapons to take out troops and towers. The first couple of levels are simply driving your machine into a building and knocking it over. […]

Time to get some road rash in Road Redemption

In my want for blatant vehicle destruction, I took a spin with Road Redemption, another Early Access title that harkens back to the games of old. Remember the chain-wielding, pipe swinging, boot kicking days of Road Rash? Road Redemption will put you back in that mindset. This is another title that will have you cackling wildly and yelling at the monitor as you work to take down your opponents while keeping out of reach so you don’t take a drain pipe to the head. This is in no way a motorcycle or racing simulator. This ain’t MotoGP baby! What you do get is a wild ride through the countryside with a bunch of other hooligans while you use whatever means are at your disposal to put yourself in first place. Forget about rules. Forget about playing fair. Forget about that cop that wants to pull you over. That is for the weak! This is another Early Access title, which of […]

Next Car Game: Wreckfest

There’s been an update to Next Car Game, an actual Race Track and a slight variant that makes it into a very large Figure-8. There has also been the addition of multiplayer. It’s been awhile since I got behind the wheel of this one and I’m surprised I been away so long. This game is an utter riot to play! The chances of your getting T-Boned or slammed headlong into the barrier wall are so high that it’s more of a surprise when it doesn’t happen! This is not a precision racing experience. First of all the cars are far from the high performance machines or other games. They are big, rusty, rear wheel drive clunkers that just might give you tetanus just by looking at them. They drive like crap and have huge amounts of body roll. If you start to lose grip or the back end starts to fish tail, you’re hitting something or someone. But oh my […]

More Steam Early Access Titles – The Forest and Killing Floor

My list of Early Access games just keeps growing and growing. I just added The Forest to my collection. I’m not normally one to play these survival style games, but this looks quite appealing and certainly fits with the Halloween season. The reviews also make it seem quite humorous and bawdy so I’m willing to give it a try. Plus, I like supporting Early Access projects. Another Halloween themed title made it into my cart as well – The Killing Floor – Complete Bundle. Now this just looks nut. It looks like all out carnage and mayhem with a ton of DLC to add to the experience. The whole bundle is mere pennies on the dollar so it’s a really good purchase. I’m actually quite terrible at this style of game as well so I have no illusions that I will be dead time and time again. But it’s all about the experience isn’t it? And finally, a silly little […]
