Isn’t it Microsoft who’s playing catch up?

So Microsoft says it’s not playing catch up to Apple when it comes to the mobile space and giving away iWorks is a sign of desperation. And Microsoft feels that since you can use memory cards for a Surface that it’s the superior device. Well hang on now. Microsoft may be giving away it’s Office suite with the Surface, but considering it’s not been built as a touch application that really isn’t saying much. Plus, Apple is giving away iWorks for the desktop, not just the tablet. Additionally, have you ever seen anyone use applications on the Surface without the connected keyboard and mouse? Awkward! I don’t disagree for a moment that Pages and iWorks are used by a much smaller audience than Office, but, when you start giving away an OS for free and you give away a complete productivity suite that’s not a crippled piece of code like Works, and it integrates mobile and desktop machines, you’ll get […]

ZOMG!! 8 Core Tablet from Samsung?

This is so completely over the top for a tablet that it makes my head spin. An 8 core tablet? What the hell is the point? But the bigger question is, how much will it cost and how long will the battery last? It didn’t take long to get to multiple cores just like we have in desktop machines did it? But seriously, what are you going to do with all that computing power? I know this is the future of tablet, more power, more memory, I’m just wondering what kind of apps this will let you run and what kind of future apps and games this will spawn developers to create. You can certainly make some wickedly cool games, far beyond the "casual" genre that’s for sure. And if games are the mainstay for this kind of device, does this spell trouble for Consoles? If you have the same, if not more, power in the palm of your hand […]

Out of 64GB, Surface lets you use 23GB

Out of the 64GB storage space available in the Surface only 23GB will be available for use. The OS, Recovery Partition and installed apps will steal 41GB of space. Holy hell, this thing is supposed to be optimized for tablets? This is the stripped down version of Windows 8? My ass!! The Pro version is just as bad, with 45GB going to the OS and apps. This is worse than a pre-configured PC. What part of a 40+GB OS is portable? Microsoft’s 64GB Surface Pro will only have 23GB usable storage

Samsung Loses Interest in Windows RT Tablets

Another blow to the Windows 8 Tablet – Samsung has decided making a Windows 8 tablet isn’t worth the trouble. Samsung also states there is no clear definition and direction for the Windows 8 tablet. You have to wonder how other companies feel about the Windows 8 tablet and Windows 8 in general. Sales and reception of the new OS have been pretty lean so far. Maybe people are holding out for the Windows 8 Pro, but considering the price point I don’t think people are going to jump for that device. iOS and Android are still the favored platforms for users. Ubuntu entering the mobile arena is going to gain more interest than Windows 8 will. Microsoft has to realize that a PC in a different case is still a PC. Windows 8 isn’t really meant to be used without the attached keyboard and mouse. Microsoft didn’t develop a truly touch read device. It’s a clumsy hybrid. You also […]

The Kindle Fire, long use review

With the iPad 3 (that’s what I’m calling it) out about town and other tablets hitting the streets, I’ve been asked quite a few times what I think of my Kindle Fire and am I still happy with the original iPad. As far as the iPad goes, I’ve never had a complaint. The software selection is amazing, the prices are usually very good (if not, wait for a sale and ask yourself if that app isn’t really worth the price of a Starbuck’s coffe), the crashes have been extremely rare, the updates haven’t caused me any problems and I’ve never regretted having one. I think the iPad is a fantastic accessory and jumping to the iPad 3 would be wonderful, but I simply can’t justify the price. I don’t feel the original is slow, I’m very happy with the graphics and reading capabilities and keep it with me all the time. Do I think the iPad 3 is worth it? […]
