Multitasking on the iPod Touch and iPad is pointless

Let’s just get right to the point, multitasking on the iPod Touch and the iPad is a pointless venture and does nothing but deplete battery resources. I know multitasking isn’t available for the iPad, but we all know its coming and I don’t want it. I’m not going to be amused when I have to replace the entire device because the damn batter y is dead.

The only useful feature for iOS4 (for me as a Touch user) is Folders. It’s great for grouping apps, but the multitasking doesn’t do anything for me. I admit, once you load an app and then exit out, you can get back into it pretty quickly. But really, how often do you need this? I guess this is fine with really large games, but for all the other utilities out there I don’t see the need. They load quickly enough as it is. Oh my, I can’t wait 2 seconds for an app to load? You’re really switching in and out of games that much?

What I have noticed is that my Touch needs to be recharged every other day whereas before it would work for nearly a week without a recharge. All that polling for wireless networks and listening for messages is just killing the battery life. I really want to turn all that crap off.

The iPad still does single tasking and it works perfectly fine. I really don’t have a need to constantly switch apps and poll for new content. For people who have a 3G connection and want to poll for Twitter and Facebook updates all day long the multitasking is great. But I have no need for my devices to constantly do things when I’m not looking at them. When I turn them off, I want them to be off…

Considering the battery can’t be replaced this just seems to be pushing me headlong into buying a new device before it’s time. I suppose I could force the device back to the factory settings, but what a mess that would be. But if I have to keep recharging this damn thing every time I turn around, I may have to just so it’ll last!

Am I the only one seeing this battery drain since the upgrade? For Touch users what grand benefit is there to iOS4? I’m sure there’s a lot of behind the scenes updates that make it better for devs, but as a user I think I’m paying the price.

So far, I’m not a fan of iOS4.

Thanks for reading you majestic sausage.
