A return to desktop publishing

It’s a return to desktop publishing! I’m not sure what has given me the publishing bug or the writing bug for thatmatter, but I really want to get back to editing documents with apps like Corel Draw, InDesign and FrameMaker. Perhaps I yearn for my college days. No, those sucked so that’s not it. It’s been years since I messed around with FrameMaker, 5.5.6 to be exact. It was just starting to make sense to me when I realized my machine was woefully underpowered to actually get any real work down. The old PIII, single processor (no such thing as core yet), sub-gigahertz machine with 1GB of ram. InDesign had just been created too so I bought one of those Teach Yourself in 24 Hours books and promptly put the whole project aside. I remember the days of actually using Aldus Pagemaker, way back before Adobe bought them. They were the leading desktop publishing app mainly because they were one […]

World of Goo and Bug Heroes

A couple of interesting bits here: World of Goo is now available for both the iPad and the iPhone. It’s a universal app, so if you bought it during the last 99 cent sale you’re all set to download it to your other device. I’ve played it a few times on the iPad and find it a strangely entertaining game. It’s certainly not lacking in character. App Store Links: World of Goo, $0.99 World of Goo HD, $4.99 (Universal) Bug Heroes I’ve never heard of this game before but there seems to be quite a bit of excitement around this latest update. The description sounds interesting: From the creators of N.Y.Zombies comes an all new blend of action, adventure, castle defense, and role playing elements! Master up to nine legendary Bug Heroes, including a sword wielding Spider assassin, an armored Beetle warrior, a machine gun toting Ant engineer, and more! Shoot, slice, dice, and bash your enemies with a variety […]

Windows Phone 7 gaming sales “disappointing”

I’m not trying to be rude here but this really shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise. The MS phone simply doesn’t have the adoption rate of the other platforms and integrating with the Xbox just isn’t that big of a deal. It’s an interesting concept but hardly all that practical. Sure, there is a want to play games that are similar to the console games, but just as many of us want something different, something unique to the platform. When the conversion rate is significantly higher on the other platforms it’s not going to take devs very long to focus all their attention elsewhere. And as we know the main driving force behind any computer platform is the games it offers. Without games you really don’t have much. The developers, who did not wish to be named, went on to say that the conversion rates from trail/demo versions of Xbox LIVE titles on Windows Phone 7 to fully […]
