FileBrowser – Access files on remote computers

I’m somewhat surprised it’s taken me this long to discover a program like Filebrowser which lets you browse and view the contents of your desktop machine. It’s not Remote Desktop, instead you get access to all the files on the system. You can then open and view those files, like PDF or JPG or you can transfer them down and save them on the iPad. There is also the fantastic ability to play MP4 and MP3 files directly from a remote machine. I really like this app for a slew of reasons. First, you can move and copy files around on the remote machine without sitting in front of it. You can view files directly from your "server" without actually storing them on your device. This basically means that you get unlimited storage space for the iPad. The thing I really like though is that I can get to files I don’t want with me all the time. For example, […]

Price Drop on Awesome Note for iPad

I’ve been searching for the best note taking apps for the iPad and think I have found them in Notebooks for iPad and Chapters – Notebooks for Writing, however, one of my personal favorites Awesome Note for iPad has dropped the price of their excellent note taking app. For a very limited time they are offering a 40% discount and have dropped the price to $2.99. That is a great deal for this excellent application! Had Awesome Note come out before I made the purchase for Notebooks for iPad it would have been a real head scratcher as to which one to get. In fact it still is. I think both apps are simply fantastic (I have Awesome Note for the Touch). They both have some excellent features but they do target a slightly different audience. But either way, this is a great app and a very good price. If you’re looking for a solid and feature rich note taking […]

How to Password Protect Part of a WordPress Post

The question came up about how to Password Protect part of a WordPress post but still allow a description or some other explanatory text to be displayed. It seemed like a pretty straightforward request but it’s not something that WordPress handles right out of the box. You can easily password protect a post, but you can’t see anything so can’t give details about why the rest of the text is hidden. For example you want to provide links to family pictures that only your real family can get to. Or you want to offer photos or a download to specific groups. In searching around for a solution I came across multiple sites (all related I’m sure) that wanted to rip me off for $50 to $150 for a plugin that would solve the problem. Egad, are you serious?! They wanted to make some sort of user level management system within WordPress that would allow me to charge users or fleece […]

Rapid PHP 2010

As my final web development tool I have Rapid PHP 2010 which I got for a pretty hefty discount off Bits Du Jour. I do quite a bit of editing to both HTML and PHP files and wanted an editor that designed exclusively to handle multiple language types. Ironically, Rapid PHP looks and works in very similar fashion to Notepad++. Notepad++ handles dozens of file formats and has a slew of tools for cleaning up code, checking syntax and getting your code sorted. Not to mention it’s free. So how does Rapid PHP compare? Ironically they’re very similar. Rapid PHP is an excellent editor with a lot of tools to help get the coding done. You can create code libraries, you get a preview window to see how your code work, you can create projects with multiple web files and it has several verification tools to keep things in order. For example, if you forget the closing tag or don’t […]
