Index Your Files is Refreshingly Good

I have a lot of files. I have so many files I forget about them sometimes. But I’ve been using Index Your Files for the past couple of months and I have it to be a brilliant app that locates files almost instantly. Yes, I know Windows can actually index files itself, but I have to say I’ve never been impressed with it. I’ve never really found it to be all that fast or accurate. But IDF really is that fast and accurate. I made reference to it before but it really does find files within a second on my machine. Plus it works very well with wildcards and partial file names. It’s very accurate in picking up the correct file with just bits and pieces of the file name. Once it’s found a set of matching files you can click on them to get a preview to see if it’s what you want. That goes for picture files, music […]

Search and Replace within WordPress

I was given an intriguing task today; replace a URL within every WordPress to an updated URL. It doesn’t really sound that hard you just replace Site A with Site B. But what happens when you have hundreds of posts? It’s not really that simple any more, but I found a fantastic and easy to use WordPress Plugin that took care of the job in mere seconds. Enter Search and Replace for your Database. The plugin is called Search and Replace and when activated gives you a simple screen of checkboxes on where you want to look for your search string. You can change the content of the post, the title, the Author and several other criteria. And then as you would expect you enter the string to search for and what you want to replace it with. Boom it’s done. This directly changes the database so the changes are permanent. As the instructions say, make a backup before you […]

Artisteer as a Web Development Tool

I’m not a web developer by any means. I can’t take a web editor with a blank page and create something wondrous and magical. It’s fairly rare for me to create anything wondrous or magical regardless of whether or not a web editor is involved. I can edit page elements once they’ve been created, but starting from scratch isn’t something I do well. Unless you count making pages that say "Hello World" on them. I’m champion at that. But anyway, with the new release of Artisteer 3.0 not only does it allow for the creation of blog themes but you can use it as an actual web page design tool. I had a simple project in mind so I thought I would give Artisteer a try and see how it faired. I wanted to create several static pages that all linked together through a very simple Nav menu just under a banner. Its layout would be very similar to this […]

10 Billion Downloads for the App Store

No matter how you look at it, that is a hell of a lot of software! And even if a majority of those transactions were $0.99 that is a tremendous amount of cash. Personally, I think the app store is a fantastic idea. A central location for apps which you know have been screened and won’t screw up your computer really has appeal. I know Windows based set ups like Steam and Impulse are trying to emulate that same feeling, but those are mainly for games. There isn’t quite the same repository for Apps and Utilities. But still, that’s one heck of a milestone and shows people really wants apps and entertainment on their mobile devices. Judging how quickly that came around, I wonder how long it will take to tick over the next billion…

Microsoft Expression Suite 4

I’ve decided to check out the Microsoft Expression Web 4 Upgrade to see what new features it has and how it compares to the previous 3.0 release. First off, it looks pretty much the same as far as the UI goes. When it comes to Microsoft apps that’s a good thing. They have a tendency to jumble up everything and make it more difficult to find the options you’re looking for. It has the same layout with the Toolbox, Folder list and Properties boxes. It’s actually pretty easy to jump in and straight creating pages – if you know what you’re doing. Like the previous version this is mainly an editor. It’s not a design tool that will help you color pages, select buttons and be "artistic". It doesn’t come with templates, there is no picture gallery tool or site building wizard. If you need that as your base, Expression Web is just going to frustrate you. So how is […]
