I regret updating to Powerdesk 8

There is something really flakey about this app. I’m not sure if this a bug or some incompatibility with Windows 7, but when I delete folders the listing stays in the window and when I try to delete it again I get a permissions error. The problem is, the folder really was deleted Powerdesk just didn’t update. In the past week or so this has happened dozens of times on two of my machines. If I close Powerdesk down and then restart it, the folder is magically removed from the list. I just can’t work like this. I’m switching back to Powerdesk 7. But why use a 3rd party file manager at all? Simply put I can’t stand the explorer that comes with Windows. It’s useless to me. I’ve been using Powerdesk for years and love it, but Powerdesk 8 needs to go back in the over and finish cooking, it’s broken all to hell. I really like Directory Opus […]

Waxing Poetic About 2010

I could probably sit here and write a dozen pages about all the things that happened in 2010, but that wouldn’t be fun for anyone, except for me. Instead, I want to focus on the thing I thought was the most exciting about 2010. And that is the iPad. Now before people roll their eyes and close the browser, I have to say that the iPad and what it represents has me more excited about technology and computers than I’ve been in a decade. I liken this as the shift from DOS to Windows 3.1 and then from Win 3.1 to Windows 95. It was a huge change in the way we interacted with computers. But unlike the fights and struggles of getting Windows 95 to work, the iPad and the software behind it just work. The greatest thing with the iPad is that you just use it. You don’t have to worry about the software underneath and whether or […]

VLC is driving me mad!

I’ve said it before, I love the idea of the VLC app for iPad. Being able to copy AVI files straight to the iPad is so damn convenient and something Apple should make the iPad support natively. But alas they don’t, and alas VLC doesn’t seem to support it either. Sure, you can copy all sorts of TV episodes or video clips over and they do play, sort of, but I constantly have the problem where the video will stop after 5-10 minutes, every time I try to play something, for every video I try. I’ve tried movies, I’ve tried TV episodes, I’ve tried cartoons and no matter what I do the playback always hangs and VLC has to be shut down. And it’s never in the same place twice so I know the clip isn’t bad. And I watch these clips in Windows Media Player without issue. Alas, it seems some incompatibility or some other glitch is plaguing me. […]

I’ve bought a ton during this Ashampoo promotion

Ashampoo is practically giving their software away and I have to admit I have been indulging in some shopping. I grabbed another copy of Winoptimizer 7 and bought an upgrade to HDD Controller 2. And since they were so dirt cheap I also bought a copy of Snap4 and Photo Commander 8, which all totaled was about $16. Photo Commander is actually pretty good. I tinker with a whole slew of tools to organize photos like Faststone Viewer and Irfanview, but Photo Commander has a neat calendar function, collage, merge and some other "filters" which have a neat effect. As a photo organizer it’s actually not too bad. I need to spend some more time with it, but for $2.50 it’s not a bad purchase at all. Snap4 is actually quite good. I use a lot of screen shots for the QA process and this has a whole host of tools available. You can overlay arrows, text boxes, make highlights, […]

Let’s start off the New Year with some savings shall we? Ashampoo is having another sale where you can save 66% off everything and anything they offer in their online store. Quite frankly I’m partial to Winoptimizer 7 and Burning Studio 10 and now you can buy them for under $10 each. Actually, you get both of them for just over $10 with this new coupon. All you need to do is type in "happy2011" when it asks for a coupon and you will see an immediate savings.
