Anybody catch the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries?

It’s an Australian import, just like myself, so of course I had to watch. I know people who know people. It’s a pretty cool show, if you like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. It’s set in the 1920’s in Australia and is based on a series of books by Kerry Greenwood. I haven’t heard of her work before, but after watching seeing the first episode, I’m very keen to learn more. Looks like she’s written a whole series of crime novels with Miss Fisher and has spun off another set.

AirPlay hasn’t turned out to be quite as stable as I’d hoped

I got the Apple TV, hooked it up and got it on the network in less than 5 minutes. Most of the time was spend typing in network passwords using the rather awkward remote that comes with it. But, undeterred, I got it all up and running. It was working great until I tried to play Need for Speed on it. The game came right up, but the display was choppy as hell. Is that my network flaking out or interference from all the WiFi hotspots in the neighborhood? Sure, I have multiple machines hooked up through WiFi, but I didn’t think the connection speed would be this bad. Clearly, more investigation is needed. If I just play music or start a regular app it all seems to work fine. I even tried Real Racing 2 HD which is supposed to be optimized for this sort of thing, but it didn’t want to work for me either. I’ll have to […]

My machine has soiled it pantaloons

Ok, this is ridiculous. My Windows 7 machine has completely crapped itself and it seems hundreds of people have run into this problem. It boots just fine, but when it gets to the login screen, it goes black and there is no way to log in. You can see the cursor and move it around, but there is no way to get to a desktop. There is no way to get past it or get into the machine from Safe Mode. I’m not entirely sure how to fix this. Like I said, dozens of people have written about this and the solutions range from reformatting, to swapping out DLL’s, to disconnecting USB drives, to virus problems. Great, this should be fun to fix.

iPad cases and the Apple TV

Bought some cases and an Apple TV to go with my iPad. I bought one case, and then found another I would like to try. While I was messing around with Amazon I decided to go ahead and buy the Apple TV. The idea of playing games on the big screen is pretty appealing. Plus it plays Netflix and I can stream music and movies from the iPad directly to the TV. I figure for $99, it’s worth messing around with. I also picked up my renewal for NIS 2012 for less than $25 and managed to grab one of the Sandisk Cruzer 32GB thumbdrives for less than $25. It may be slow of the write speed, but toting around 32GB in your pocket isn’t a bad idea. I can’t keep filling up the iPad using AirDisk now can I? And I got a 10 port USB hub. All these damn external drives and taking up all my slots!

Wow, these new iPad cases suck!

Bought some cases for the iPad, I have to say, that’s the most disappointing thing about this new device – the cases suck! The original iPad case was just about perfect. It opened like a book to protect the screen, it completely enveloped the device so it wouldn’t slip out of your hand or get scratched, the material was easy to grip even playing those intense racing games, it had the neat flap that folded over the device and kept it snugly in place so it couldn’t slip out, and it gripped the glass face just enough to be secure, but still be out of the way. Can they make something that cool for the iPad 3? Hell no! They have those stupid SmartCover that don’t protect it at all, leave the back completely exposed and don’t provide any support or grip when holding it from the back. I bought some rubberized case which should protect it for the moment […]
