Anyone have experience with this new product called DimmDrive?

I was just browsing through Steam and up popped a new "memory management" tool called DimmDrive, which integrates with Steam and allows you to run games (or portions of a game) in a Ram Drive. Ram Drives are by no means a new idea, but this is geared towards games and decreasing their load times. All right, I’m totally intrigued.

As I’ve written before, my game rig is an 8-core AMD FX8350 with 32GB of ram and it’s pretty damn fast already. It has regular spindle drives with no SSD, so I wonder if I could squeeze out some more speed with DimmDrive?

I’ve been reading through a few forums and I’m not playing first person shooters, but rather racing games like Dirt 2/3, Next Car Game, Assetto Corsa and Grid Autosport. There is also my new favorite, Shroud of the Avatar. Will I see a performance boost in these games? Games work quite well now and I have no real complaints, but if it shaves time off the load screen, then I’m keenly interested. Shroud of the Avatar has a couple of big scenes so I wonder if this would help?

Also, it appears this will work for regular apps like Firefox, Photoshop and others. I have an SSD in my work machine and load my smaller apps from it and they come up very quick. Will this give me a noticeable performance increase in my work apps?

So, to that end, does anyone have experience with DimmDrive? On the surface, it looks really impressive. Is it really possible to belt out 10,000 MB/s read speeds? That would be amazing!

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then check out DimmDrive.com or go over to DimmDrive on Steam and see what you think. It’s on sale for $30, which sounds pretty reasonable, but I’d like to know if it will work with the games I have and what sort of boost I might see. The reviews on Steam are coming across as a bit mixed, but I think a lot of that is due to people not having enough RAM. I don’t see how having 4GB or 8GB in your machine and then using a Ram Drive is going to help you out. Unless you have at least 16GB in there, I don’t think you should be playing with Ram Drives.

The Developer seems pretty active and responsive which is always a good sign. He even has some YouTube videos which I’m going to watch. Unfortunately, there is no trial version otherwise I would be all over this. So if anyone with 16 or 32GB of Ram has this loaded and can offer some insight that would be great!
