PhraseExpress – I like these TextExpander apps

They go by many names – AutoCorrect, AutoComplete, Word Expander, Text Expander and Text Macros just to name a few, however the idea is basically the same, take a shortcut piece of text and replace it with something much larger to save time and typing. It’s a great idea for mobile devices, but is it worth the effort when it comes to a desktop machine. Until recently I would have said no, but I’m beginning to change my mind. Most Text Expansion tools give examples of inserting your signature or a greeting, which doesn’t really do anything for me. I don’t write that material so why do I need this tool. But then it dawned on me, I can use these tools to expand all those stupid three letter acronyms I have to deal with. Sure, I know what they mean, but does the poor sap I’m sending an email to understand them? And TLAs are being recycled through every […]

Run CCleaner on a schedule through Windows Task Scheduler

It’s always a good idea to clean out the browser cache on a regular basis and CClearner is an easy and FREE way of making that happen. I know I should have set this up a long time ago, but I’m just getting around to setting up CCleaner on a schedule. It’s actually quite simple, you just need to use the /auto switch to make it run without bringing up the dialog box and asking for input. To schedule system cleans (for example clean the system every Friday at 10am) you will need to manually create CCleaner entries in the Windows Task Scheduler. Please note that in order to do this your user account needs to have Administrative privileges. Open Windows Task scheduler. This is done by clicking Start > Control Panel. Then switching to the classic view using left navigation pane. Then entering Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler. Click Task Scheduler Library. From the Actions menu on the right […]

Samsung Loses Interest in Windows RT Tablets

Another blow to the Windows 8 Tablet – Samsung has decided making a Windows 8 tablet isn’t worth the trouble. Samsung also states there is no clear definition and direction for the Windows 8 tablet. You have to wonder how other companies feel about the Windows 8 tablet and Windows 8 in general. Sales and reception of the new OS have been pretty lean so far. Maybe people are holding out for the Windows 8 Pro, but considering the price point I don’t think people are going to jump for that device. iOS and Android are still the favored platforms for users. Ubuntu entering the mobile arena is going to gain more interest than Windows 8 will. Microsoft has to realize that a PC in a different case is still a PC. Windows 8 isn’t really meant to be used without the attached keyboard and mouse. Microsoft didn’t develop a truly touch read device. It’s a clumsy hybrid. You also […]

Microsoft seems to losing ground in the mobile market space

We all shall now feign surprise… Here’s a little nugget from MaximumPC that shows Android is actually gaining the most ground when it comes to mobile devices. Android gained the most users, increasing its share of the mobile market from 52.6 percent to 53.7 percent, while iOS jumped from 34.3 percent to 35 percent. All other mobile players saw a decline. RIM dropped a percentage point to 7.3 percent, Microsoft is down to 3 percent, and Symbian continues to wither away as it clings to just 0.5 percent of smartphones in the U.S. Microsoft Loses Mobile Market Share to Google and Apple
