Video Converter Ultimate 6 is a brilliant video converter

Since VLC has caused more problems than it’s solved and has subsequently been removed from the app store I’ve been watching movies and TV episodes inside of Goodreader for the iPad. And I’ve been converting the videos using Xilisoft’s Video Converter Ultimate 6, which has turned out to be a brilliant piece of software. It can pretty much convert between any video formats out there, but what I like it that it has multiple settings for the iPad. Also, it is multicore aware so it blazes through conversions. The interface is dead simple to work with and you can queue up all manner of files and just let it rip. Over the past few weeks I’ve been experimenting with several conversion utilities and this one works the best for me. What makes it even better is that I managed to get my copy during a free giveaway. But after converting dozens of files I feel it’s really worth the asking […]

Best Apps for 2010

I took a long look and thought about it quite a bit, which apps are the best for 2010. That is a mighty broad question, but here are some of the apps I love and use every day. Firefox – IE is pure crap and Chrome is just too fragile Roboform – Real password management AnyDVD/CloneDVD – The only real solution for putting your media on a device Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate – The best solution for converting media 7-Zip – For controlling all those damn archives Ashampoo Burning Studio – Makes burning DVD easy again There are lots of other apps out there which are great, yet so many of them are interchangeable, but without these I would be totally lost. I really don’t know where I’d be without Firefox. Chrome really isn’t good enough for me and IE is, well, it’s IE. And the worst app for 2010? Well, that would easily be Windows 7. I’ve tried to […]

I regret updating to Powerdesk 8

There is something really flakey about this app. I’m not sure if this a bug or some incompatibility with Windows 7, but when I delete folders the listing stays in the window and when I try to delete it again I get a permissions error. The problem is, the folder really was deleted Powerdesk just didn’t update. In the past week or so this has happened dozens of times on two of my machines. If I close Powerdesk down and then restart it, the folder is magically removed from the list. I just can’t work like this. I’m switching back to Powerdesk 7. But why use a 3rd party file manager at all? Simply put I can’t stand the explorer that comes with Windows. It’s useless to me. I’ve been using Powerdesk for years and love it, but Powerdesk 8 needs to go back in the over and finish cooking, it’s broken all to hell. I really like Directory Opus […]

Waxing Poetic About 2010

I could probably sit here and write a dozen pages about all the things that happened in 2010, but that wouldn’t be fun for anyone, except for me. Instead, I want to focus on the thing I thought was the most exciting about 2010. And that is the iPad. Now before people roll their eyes and close the browser, I have to say that the iPad and what it represents has me more excited about technology and computers than I’ve been in a decade. I liken this as the shift from DOS to Windows 3.1 and then from Win 3.1 to Windows 95. It was a huge change in the way we interacted with computers. But unlike the fights and struggles of getting Windows 95 to work, the iPad and the software behind it just work. The greatest thing with the iPad is that you just use it. You don’t have to worry about the software underneath and whether or […]
