Farming in Minecraft

I tried my hand at farming in Minecraft. That went well. I worked the land and got seeds. I then sowed those seeds and they brought forth wheat. The wheat then brought forth bread, which happens to look more like a potato than anything else, but I was able to make food! I won’t die from starvation! I’ll leave the dying up to the ladders, the lava, the spiders and the angry pickles that seem to lurk around every corner. From my secret Minecraft talks with Don over lunch I learned that a bucket of lava can be used to power the furnace. Yes, I could have learned that from Minecraftwiki.net but that’s not the point. With my mighty lava machine I made iron pants! I ruined the last pair the lads made for me since I have a tendency to fall down a lot and a things have a habit of jumping out of the dark shadows and roughing […]

Firemint gets bought up by EA?

Egad, I’m just starting to see articles surface saying that Electronic Arts has moved in to buy Firemint. Firemint just recently did their own acquisition of Infinite Interactive and now looks to be part of the big EA machine. I have mixed feelings about this I’m afraid. I love seeing independent game companies make it to the big leagues, but honestly EA has been a mixed bag when it comes to their games. The Need for Speed series is actually quite good on iOS but they seem to rely far too heavily on titles like Monopoly, Yahtzee and Boggle. These decent but rather uninspired ports of the classics are good, but are far too expensive for what you get. Plus EA is painfully slow when it comes to updates. I have Yahtzee and I like it, but how long did it take them to fix that stupid bug that caused the game to always appear upside down when you rotated […]

Minecraft and the wicked lava machine

The freaks come out at night. That’s why I stay underground and tunnel around like a ferret on crack. I’ve made my way to the center of the earth. And it’s hot down there. There is much lava. And lava is a temperamental mistress. Just when you think you have her all under control she has a massive flare up and the next thing you know you’re running around in circles with your hair on fire. We all know this will end badly. You may have water standing by but it takes just one wrong turn and your running down the corridor in the opposite direction until you’re face down in a pile of ash with all your worldly possessions spinning above you like a beacon of your epic failure. Once again, mistakes were made.

So how did PagePlus work out?

I’ve only been using PagePlus X5 for a little over a week, but in that time I think I’ve touched most of the major features and I can honestly say I’m really impressed. It almost pains me to make a comparison to Microsoft Publisher but PagePlus seem to have a lot of the ease of use of Publisher but also the power and precision of the big apps like InDesign. But unlike InDesign, the layout and menu structure of PagePlus makes sense. If you want to insert something you go to the Insert menu. If you want to format something you go to the Format menu. It seems half the battle of the other apps is just understanding their quirky methodology. PagePlus follows a more conventional word processor approach. Formatting text, like making a drop cap is very easy. PagePlus understand what it means to make one so you don’t have to get sidetracked with making the frame yourself. But, […]

I want to make a railway

I find the little train track terribly interesting. I guess it’s a tangible sort of fun. It’s something you can hold and it can be made into whatever shape you have enough track for. Which leads me to my next problem. In no way do I have enough track. I’ve been scouring the web looking for N Scale track and have been sadly disappointed at what’s being offered. Amazon has some trains and track but it’s almost impossible to tell what you’re actually buying. I looked at dozens of items and got excited about adding them to my track only to find out they were the wrong scale. And that’s not a minor miscalculation, that’s a complete blunder. So in one of those rare cases I ditched Amazon and sought goods elsewhere. After many side trips into the model train subculture I came across a site that really seemed to have things organized with decent prices. I ended up at […]
