Rush at Time Warner Arena

It was a brisk night in downtown Charlotte, but it’s gotta be better than Ohio and New York and that pesky hurricane. The show, to put it simply, was amazing. Their playing has lost nothing over the years. They still have all the power and technique, perhaps more so than most bands who are just getting started these days. The Steampunk theme looked beautiful and there was even the addition of the "Clockwork Angels String Ensemble" who played on multiple songs during the second half of the show. Just like before, I was filled with emotion and memory. As Force Ten played the original art worked played in the background, I remembered watching the Show of Hands concert footage on VHS during my college days. I remember asking Donna, who is now my wife, what Joie de Vivre meant as it pertained to the lyrics. She was 17 at the time. We lived in Colorado. Our getting together would come […]

Onward Clockwork Angels

Despite the wind and rain, Rush will be in town tonight for their Clockwork Angels Tour. It was June of 2011 when we jumped into the Time Machine and went on a tour of Moving Pictures. This time we’re off on a Steampunk adventure across a wild landscape with an ever present Watchmaker who works to control everything. I wish I would have read the accompanying book before going into this tour. I have fond memories of last year show. Both of them. We went to both the Greenville and Greensboro shows. I remember that cozy coffee shop went to before the show. I remember that glimpse of Neil’s motorcycle parked outside the arena. I remember the amazing guitar playing, the funny antics, the stunning drum kit. And let’s not forget that that strange spill right behind us. I have no doubt this will be an amazing show. Too bad it’s not actually Halloween night! It still astounds me […]

Hurricane Coming!!!

There is an ill wind rising to the East. Our customers are abandoning their data centers and heading for safer ground. It’s all fun and games until you have to build a raft out of data cables. And there is only so long you can survive on diet soda and stale candy bars. Going to be a long night. I wonder what manner of chaos we will walk into tomorrow.

Let me gaze upon the Microsoft Surface

I just had my first glimpse at the Microsoft Surface and it’s actually a pretty nice looking device. The screen looks very similar to the Kindle Fire screen. The aspect ration is 16×10, which doesn’t look bad, but feels a tiny bit elongated to me. The keyboard/cover combination is pretty nice. It even has a mouse pad built in. The images are bright and Angry Birds looked quite nice. We were having some network problems so we couldn’t put it through it’s paces, but overall it’s much better than I expected. The Windows 8 UI is certainly geared more towards the tablet, but I’m still not sure I like it. The live tabs don’t look too bad, but they don’t look good everywhere. The app store seems hard to navigate and sort of came across as a beta version. Some of the touch features didn’t come across as responsive as they should. I did like that the keyboard could snap […]
