I’m not sure I see the point of an iPad mini

The rumors are flying fast and furious, but I’m not sure I get the point. Why an iPad mini? I have the Kindle Fire and don’t find the size to be very productive. Is this Apple’s attempt to make a low budget e-book reader or perhaps a portable gaming console for kids? I have no doubt it will sell, I just don’t see the practical application. I’m sure much will be revealed in October.

Poor Lance

I’m an avid cyclist, but not a fanboy, and I have to say this is some sad news. It’s disappointing to see a cycling icon in the middle of such a tangled mess. I firmly believe that Lance is capable of doing the cycling feats we’ve seen. Unlike riders like Boonen and Cancellara, who ride week after week in different races, putting themselves in danger and getting banged up, Armstrong only focus on the Tour and trained for it the whole year. He went into that race well rested and in top condition. He didn’t come into it on the heels of another race of healing from some injury. And just like Wiggins, tens of millions of dollars have been spent on training, research and equipment to make Lance the best cyclist in the world. He trained for one thing. He participated in one thing. I have no doubt he’s capable of winning those tours without the help of drugs. […]

Acronis True Image 2012 for $19.95. That includes the Plus Pack and a Second Copy for Free

Here’s a deal I pretty much couldn’t refuse. For $19.95 you get two copies of True Image 2012, the Plus Pack and a free upgrade to True Image 2013 when it comes out. I assume that will be the end of the months since that’s when the deal ends. There is a deal out there right now where you can get this same bundle for $29.95, but this is the same deal for an additional $10 off. Considering the hard drive issues I’ve had recently, getting a true backup of all my data seems like a good idea. I’ve also been messing around with O&O DiskImage 6, and while that’s a decent app, it’s not really as feature rich as it should be and it’s too kludgey to build a boot disk for it. It’s not bad, it just could be better. The deal ends August 22, so if you’re looking to make a backup of your entire drive, want […]

Curse you power management!!

Ok, help me understand something. When I go into Control Panel and set the Power Options so that my machine is Always On and to use as much power as possible to keep my machine running at full speed with my drives always spinning and my monitor always on, why do my network cards still go to sleep? And further more, who in the hell decided putting a network card to sleep was a way to save energy? Seriously, in the grand scheme of things, what the hell is that accomplishing? I kept noticing my Windows 7 machine would drop network connections. I set it to be on full power all the time. When I forced it to connect to a website, everything would "wake up" and all would be well again. Seems the network cards (Wifi and LAN) have a Power Management tab of their own and I had to disable the option of them going to sleep. What […]

And then the video card went out

Egad, more computer drama Just when I put the failed hard drive behind me, the video card in my machine goes out. And I mean, it went out. The fan came off the spindle and sounded like a chainsaw running. I’m not sure if it started to overheat, but the video color began to separate, then pixelate, turned to static, then turned into a series of completely unrecognizable blobs and blurs. And that was the end of that. After shaking my fist at the sky multiple times, I pulled the card out, checked the specs and looked to BestBuy for a replacement. BB has an uncanny knack of showing me everything that’s NOT available at the store near me. I gave up and went to look in person. Thing is, I need a specific card. I need some of the old technology. My monitors aren’t DVI or HDMI. I still have two perfectly usable LCD monitors with VGA connectors. […]
