Encoding video and DVD for the iPad

So the question is, what’s the best way to get movies and DVDs onto the iPad so you can watch them on the go? I know a lot of people want to go with free tools and there are plenty of them out there, but sometimes you get what you pay for. A lot of those free tools install all sorts of mysterious codecs, haven’t been updated in a year or conflict with your current audio and video drivers. I tried a slew of them and in many cases they have their place, but for the most part I shy away from them. My conversion tool of choice is the Xilisoft bundle of Video Converter Ultimate and DVD Ripper Ultimate. I got these in a holiday bundle with DVD Creator and Audio Extractor and they have been staples of my movie conversion process. I wrote quite a while ago that almost all of my DVDs are actually ripped with AnyDVD […]

Firefox 20? What the devil?

I’m all for frequent upgrades, but this browser stuff is getting a little ridiculous. Firefox wants me to upgrade to version 20. Come on? Is that really where we are? Just because Google changed the revision number of Chrome every ten minutes doesn’t mean everyone else has to follow. Just a couple years ago Firefox was making a big "todo" about reaching version 3! What happened to major upgrades and significant improvements before you upped the version number? Are we really any further than Firefox 6? I guess you can say, "what’s in a name", but seriously, at this rate we’re going to be at version 40 before the end of the year.

AcePlayer – An easy way to drag and drop "unsupported" media to the iPad

Not everything is in the MP4 format, which means the iPad can’t natively play it. In their infinite wisdom, Apple left out support for AVI and WMV. Although MP4 is taking over as the dominant format, you still want to play other formats. For a while there was VLC Player, but it was unstable as hell and got yanked from the app store. I came across AcePlayer which does a really nice job of playing other file formats with an easy to use drag and drog file copy method. It’s not the most sophisticated program in the world, but it gets the job done. Start up AcePlayer, click Settings and the option for Wi-Fi Transfer. This is the web address you need load in your browser to connect to your iPad. From there you can start uploading movies. The wireless transfer is a great help since you don’t need iTunes on every machine just to get some files. Once the […]

I played in OT until it crashed

I pressed my luck as far as it would go. The Military Case Event ended a couple of days ago, but I kept opening boxes until the game literally just closed out on me. I opened about 20 cases without any real luck. It was more of the same with Enhanced Bikes, EU Baton and Carnival SledgeHammer. I was hopeful, but didn’t really expect it to work out. Oh well, both events are done for me. Just hanging around waiting for the next one to begin. I’m going to agree with a lot of the other comments that getting the 10th item now is almost impossible unless you use gold. And even then it seems like you need a Vault of it, which is $100. That’s a bit ridiculous. Hell, I’m not going to spend $10 let alone $100 every time a new event comes along. This game isn’t that cool…

Totally Lame Ass Prizes – Crime City

So the Epic Boss Event has really just begun, but the prizes being handed out suck. I don’t want any more Punk Pants thank you very much. How about a little more variety Gree? And speaking of variety, how many Enhanced Bikes and Carnival Sledgehammers do I need? Can you at least change up the items a bit? These are the same weapons from a dozen events ago. Seriously, I don’t need 22 bikes. Too bad you can’t sell off the excess crap and make a few bucks off the deal. With 5 hours left I have 9 Walkie Talkies and it doesn’t look too damn good for number 10 to come into my life. It used to be I failed miserably at the 20 item events, but actually finished the 10 item ones. Since Gree put in these Uber weapons at the end that’s not happening any more. I’ll spend the gold for buildings, but damn, spot fleecing me […]
