Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol – Turn based aerial combat? Yes indeed, it does work.

Normally I shy away from "Free" these days. That usually means the games is crap, or you can play for around an hour, perhaps an entire day and then you need to start handing over the cash to get any further. Games like Big Win Football and Gear and Guts immediately spring to mind; great games ruined by the incessant need for cash to progress. But I digress. Ace Patrol is new game by Sid Meier and 2K Games. The premise is quite simple, you fly your squadron over enemy lines and complete missions. Your pilots gain experience with each mission which leads them to perform more aerial maneuvers. More maneuvers means more attack and evasive tactics. It also means your best pilots get access to special weapons and armor. I went through the first free mission with pretty low expectations. The idea of turn based combat seemed a little uneventful, but to my surprise it was quite good. It […]

Dockside Mill Madness – Crime City

As one event ends, another begins. This time we have the Dockside Mill Madness event which is a race to build and then upgrade a new building aptly named the Dockside Mill. The initial cost of the build is a mere $75 million and at the first level you collect, $1,180,000 every 2 days. Wow, that is an expensive piece of real estate and makes the $15 million for the Pagoda look pretty ghetto in comparison. I don’t quite have enough cash to make the initial purchase, that will have to wait until the end of the tomorrow I think. I have more collecting to do. If the initial cost is $75 million, I can’t even imagine what the upgrade costs are going to be. Getting this to Level 10 could literally takes Billions to complete. I have 10 days so I’m pretty confident I can get two of these built in the time allotted. I don’t see too many […]

Voice Dream Reader – Text to Speech Reader for iPad

I’ve wanted a Text to Speech Reader for awhile and today the Voice Dream Reader has dropped in price by 50% from $9.99 to $4.99. That’s still reasonably high when it comes to iPad apps, so how does it fair? First off, why a text to speech reader in the first place? I have two goals in mind. I want to listen to text while working on other projects such as cleaning the house or mowing the lawn. Chores go a lot better when you have something to listen to and audiobooks aren’t cheap. Second, the highlighted text and reading along with the spoken word is a reinforcement for studying new subjects. It should help to focus on the content by seeing an hearing what you read. I have a lot of technical material I need to get to and I find I comprehend it better if I see it and hear it at the same time. Plus, a female […]

Wireless antenna the size of a thumbnail

Check out the size of this rascal! I needed a wireless network card and found out there are a variety of them available at Amazon for around $10. This showed up in the mailbox last night and it’s smaller than a quarter, significantly smaller. I’m using this on a Netbook that needs a bit of an update in the networking department. If this works well I plan to get another for a desktop machine that I want to move around the house. Airlink Fully compatible Wireless N 150 Ultra Mini-USB Adapter (AWLL5099)

Karateka Classic for the iPad

After the success of Karateka (despite the issues I had with it) the Karateka Classic version hits the App Store. According to the article by Touch Arcade this is a direct port of the original code using an Apple IIGS Emulator. That means it’s the same game we all know and played and died in. This was one of the first games I played for old Apple II and in monochrome color no less. I died many times over because I was in the wrong stance at the wrong time. And curse that damn bird! And I battled all this way to have the damsel in distress kick my ass because she thought I was one of the guards? Harsh lady, harsh. But anyway, the original is back and it’s only 99 cents. This should make for some pretty good game play, even if you can get it done in just one life. A side-scrolling karate classic from 1984! The […]
