Windward – More plunder, bigger ships and the green fog of war

As I continue to conquer lands and bring more areas under my control, the pirate navy is getting more and more tricky in their efforts to thwart me. Their latest form of attack is to unleash some sort of poisonous gas on me. Well it won’t work you rotten toothed devils! Throwing green fog at me might look all scary and dangerous, but it won’t stop me from sinking your ship!

The battle for territory continues, and at least for the moment, I have the upper hand. I’ve managed to conquer 4 different areas so far, upgrade through a couple of ships and secure some hefty financing from all the loot I’ve been able to scavenge and plunder. I now have my sights set on a bigger and faster ship. With that under my feet, I should be able to sink ships as fast as the pirates can build them.

I’ve also managed to upgrade to a better equipped crew who doesn’t complain as much, my hull is made of sturdier stuff so I don’t notice they pounding they try to give me in the backside and I even have a new skill that lets me dive down to a shipwreck to see what items I can retrieve. I’ve pulled up quite a few nifty items from down there.

The next goal is to move deep into the heart of the map and liberate all the juicy bits. It will take me a little while to get there, but once I do, the sea will be littered with the shipwrecks of my enemies!

I’ve been reading reviews and comments on how the game is a grind and there is no story. I can’t say that I agree. Windward does focus on trade so if going from port to port buying and selling goods isn’t your thing, then no it won’t tickle your fancy or any other bits.

And no Windward isn’t the same as Pirates, which is actually a good thing, since I found that game boring and frustrating. There were too many ways to lose a scenario and every aspect of that game was a grind.

As I have come to learn, there are lots of new skills out there waiting to be discovered and lots of loot that can enhance your ship and crew. It does take a little while to build up wealth, but once you get out of the training pool area, there is plenty of money to be made.

The quests are somewhat similar, but there are quite a few to choose from and since they should only take a few minutes to complete (for the most part) there isn’t too much of a reason to complain. And I have no doubt the dev is working on adding more quests to the game.

For a game that costs less than $15 there is plenty of entertainment value in this.

Good lord, what the hell is this?! What have you just thrown at me?

This green fog better not have come from the backside of your crew!
