A few thoughts on Early Access and Kickstarter Projects

I’m a big proponent and supporter of both Steam Early Access and Kickstarter projects, but they aren’t created equal and not every game has the same level of success in the development process. I’ve backed several projects and so far, most are progressing very well. Some good projects worth mentioning are Assetto Corsa, Plague Inc, Shroud of the Avatar and SpinTires. However, not all of them have been gems. Many start off great, then hit some sort of wall and everything grinds to a halt. I’ve had this happen with a couple of games such as Next Car Game: Wreckfest and Victory: Age of Racing. Both had solid demos going, but now they’re languishing. From all the comments, Victory is dead and everyone assumes the same for Wreckfest. Towns would probably be the worst example of an Early Access/Greenlight game gone wrong. It got a lot of support from the community and had a lot of sales. Then the devs […]

Windward – More plunder, bigger ships and the green fog of war

As I continue to conquer lands and bring more areas under my control, the pirate navy is getting more and more tricky in their efforts to thwart me. Their latest form of attack is to unleash some sort of poisonous gas on me. Well it won’t work you rotten toothed devils! Throwing green fog at me might look all scary and dangerous, but it won’t stop me from sinking your ship! The battle for territory continues, and at least for the moment, I have the upper hand. I’ve managed to conquer 4 different areas so far, upgrade through a couple of ships and secure some hefty financing from all the loot I’ve been able to scavenge and plunder. I now have my sights set on a bigger and faster ship. With that under my feet, I should be able to sink ships as fast as the pirates can build them. I’ve also managed to upgrade to a better equipped crew […]

Windward – Capturing Towns, Hunting Pirates, Ferrying Passengers, Selling Goods, Building Lighthouses – All in a Days Work

I put in several more hours into Windward and it’s starting to make sense to me. I’ve gotten the hang of buying and selling good as well as upgrading my ship. I’ve completed multiple quests which have included exploring the landscape for a cartographer, hunting down pirates and bringing them to justice for a reasonable reward, as well as bribing pirate crews to knock off all the evil that they do, building lighthouses and guard towers and bringing several cities under my protection. I’ve also plucked several sealed letters from the drink and established myself as a guy who can get things done such as establishing new towns. I’ve also come to understand a bit more in how exploration works. I left my known world and ventured into some new territory where I needed to chart the coast and locate new towns. Oh, but there was trouble brewing as none of the merchants were willing or able to sell me […]

Zack’s 5th Avenue Limited Time Building (LTB) – Building Payout and Upgrade Cost – Crime City

It’s time for a new LTB – Zack’s 5th Avenue – and make no mistake, this building is tall and has a huge footprint. In fact, it’s almost as much of an eyesore as the Empire Boardwalk we just finished. If you haven’t already expanded your hood in anticipation of this blight, you’re going to have to start leveling some of your other buildings to make room. The initial cost of this building is $115 million with an income of $1,277,778 every 1 day, or 24 hours. Right off the bat this new LTB is big and annoying. When fully upgraded it will make just shy of $96 million per day and it’ll cost you just shy of $29 billion to get there. Not sure that’s a really good return. With mods, you can make close to $160 million per day with a cost of $14 billion per building. That’s a little better, but based on the size of this […]

Windward – Piracy, Commissions, Treasure Hunts and Exploration

Who doesn’t dream of piracy? No, not hooking up a Torrent client and synching your machine with the Internet, but commandeering a boat and taking to the high seas, trading in spices, goods and liquor. Well, it seems Windward by Tasharen Entertainment Inc will let me do some of these things and you don’t have to be a master at sword play to make progress. During the Steam sale I picked up an Indie game just recently out of Early Access, Windward. It had an interesting description of – fighting pirates, trading with towns, doing quests or simply exploring. Oh, so I’m not a pirate, but actually working to stop piracy. All right, that’s a little different, I can play along with that. So I started off my adventure by aimlessly circling my inlet looking for the right direction of travel. I sorted myself out and began strafing the beaches wherein I picked up lost boxes of cargo and loot. […]
