AYBO a very nice natural language calculator

After recently discovering natural language calculators like Soulver, I've become a big fan. Yes, macOS has a calculator built in, which is fine, but not so great when you need to repeat a multi-step calculation several times. Or you set up a formula and want to change the variables. That's where these other calculators shines. I've literally just discovered a new one called, AYBO, which now has a permanent place within my desktop configuration. Soulver 2 is awesome, but has reached the end of its cycle awhile ago. AYBO looks to have a comparable feature set to Soulver 3 and Numi, but at a fraction of the price. I have no idea what AYBO stands for, but the calculator is quite impressive. As you would expect it boasts features such as expressions and variables: 10 USD + 10 EUR in GBP 50% of (10 USD + 10 EUR) in GBP 10 lb to kg 120 km to miles 60 mph […]

How the Mac Changed My Life

When I changed jobs 6 years ago, one of the things that sold me on the company was getting to use a Mac. For the past 2 decades, going back to Windows 3.1, I'd used Windows. More recently, I loved the iPod Touch, and the iPad, so the idea of getting paid to use a Mac was pretty badass. After getting over the short learning curve of understand what a DMG and PKG file were and what that install dialog wanted me to with it's big arrow pointing to Applications, I was in a good place. I was impressed with how many useful features were built into the OS. More than just Disk Utility or System Information, but things like Automator, Terminal, and Time Machine. I liked the Dock at the bottom, even going so far as to have a clone of it for my Windows machine. I liked the menu bar at the top. I liked Notification Center. I […]

Why I haven’t upgraded to Apple Silicon … yet

Despite the moronic comments from people like Linus, I’m very excited about Apple Silicon. The performance gains look as good as Apple presented. These entry level machines are running circles around the previous generation and are taking on much higher class and higher priced machines. However, I’m still waiting for my upgrade to appear, and feel it’s just on the horizon. Despite the Mac mini looking like a great desktop machine, it doesn’t quite have enough of what I need to make it a worthy successor. Even though my Mac Pro is from 2010, it sports a lot of features I need in a new machine, like 4 internal hard drives for 24TB of storage (2x3TB, 2x8TB), 128GB of ram with 8GB set aside as a ram drive, 8GB dedicated video card powering 4 monitors, and of course multiple USB ports front and back. This is my development machine, so it runs a ton of web automation in the background. […]
