Downloading Channels and Playlists with 4K Video Downloader

Downloading videos off YouTube is no major undertaking. There are more apps and plugins to grab videos than you can shake a stick at. However, things get a little more tricky when you want to download all the videos from a channel or in a playlist. My favorite tool for downloading videos is Freemake Video Downloader, but over the past few months and releases some of the features have fallen to the wayside, specifically it’s ability to download playlists. It used to have this feature, but it either no longer works or has been completely removed. Either way, feeding it a playlist URL won’t give you what you want. Strangely, getting an app to pull in a playlist is turning out to be more challenging that I thought. Most apps in fact can’t do it. They either see the URL as bad or will only grab the first item on the list and stop. Even the download managers don’t know […]

Downloading the Internet with Free Download Manager

While I was impressed with the features of Internet Download Manager, I didn’t agree with the cost to features ratio. It seemed a bit excessive to me, so the search began to see what else I could find. It was a nice program, but there are plenty of other apps that resume downloads, spawn multiple threads and organize files as they’re downloaded. That feature set just isn’t worth $24.95. I went through plenty of apps and finally arrived at what I think is a damn nice one that not only has almost all the same features, but actually comes with a price tag of free. Let’s have a look at Free Download Manager. It’s not the most awe inspiring name, but it packs a lot of punch and the first thing I noticed, it actually looks a lot like IDM. Looks aside, how does it work? I threw a couple of files at it, and had no issues with multiple […]

Putting Internet Download Manager through it’s paces

When you start looking for video download tools for YouTube or download accelerators it’s almost inevitable you will end up with links to Internet Download Manager. With all these links going around I figured I would download it and give it try in my Video Download Gauntlet of Death. Ok, there really is no gauntlet of death, but I did have several video and download tests that IDM didn’t handle so well. IDM is free to try for 30 days with a price of $24.95 to keep using it. Seems a bit expensive considering all the free tools out there. First off, IDM is supposed to speed up, resume and schedule downloads. After trying it with several different network connections I didn’t really see any difference. On a big connection it downloaded at high speed, but then again, so did everything else. On a slow connection, it was still slow, just like everything else. It does organize files into categories […]

Installing Visual Basic 6 (VB6) on Windows 7

No, that title isn’t a mistake or drunken threat, I actually went through the process to install Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 (VB6) on Windows 7 and it worked fine. Now, before things get out of hand with eye rolling and head shaking let me explain. If we go back, BASIC was built as a way to teach people programming. It’s English like syntax allows people to get the fundamentals of loops, decision trees, opening files and displaying data. Although you didn’t have to go through the low level process of memory management you still had the ability to declare variables, set constants and perform all those code functions without being overwhelmed. These are the building blocks that almost all languages share. Then once you got some code control you could unleash the power of object oriented programming and the use of Forms. I think VB6 did a very good job of exposing and handling this. It was now possible to […]

Windward – Piracy, Commissions, Treasure Hunts and Exploration

Who doesn’t dream of piracy? No, not hooking up a Torrent client and synching your machine with the Internet, but commandeering a boat and taking to the high seas, trading in spices, goods and liquor. Well, it seems Windward by Tasharen Entertainment Inc will let me do some of these things and you don’t have to be a master at sword play to make progress. During the Steam sale I picked up an Indie game just recently out of Early Access, Windward. It had an interesting description of – fighting pirates, trading with towns, doing quests or simply exploring. Oh, so I’m not a pirate, but actually working to stop piracy. All right, that’s a little different, I can play along with that. So I started off my adventure by aimlessly circling my inlet looking for the right direction of travel. I sorted myself out and began strafing the beaches wherein I picked up lost boxes of cargo and loot. […]
