Making and Burning ISOs on the cheap and easy with ImgBurn, VirtualCloneDrive and Daemon Tools Lite

I like cheap. I like easy. When you combine the two, you have my interest. And so it goes for making ISO images. Since it’s only 2015 and Microsoft has just figured out how to write an ISO image, clearly you’re going to have to fend for yourself. But fear not, there are plenty of ISO apps out there. Sad part is, most of them want a king’s ransom in payment which just chaps me to no end. However, before you spend good gaming money on making ISO images check out these tools for creating and mounting ISO images for free and for less than $5. First we’ll look at cheap. To mount and image I’ll go with Old Reliable, VirtualCloneDrive. This comes to us by the fine folks over at Slysoft who are known for their prowess with DVDs. Install this free tool and mount multiple disks just by double-clicking. This is great for mounting images of Windows, Office […]

IMDisk Ram Drive and SteamTool Library Manager

There’s quite a bit of information about Ram Drives out there, but it seems somewhat dated. I found one combination that looks kind of interesting. It’s a free Ram Drive tool called IMDisk and a manager for Steam games called SteamTool Library Manager. I haven’t actually worked with these yet, but from what I can gather, the process works a little something like this. You first make and mount a new Ram Drive with IMDisk. This will carve out a portion of your memory and make it appear as a hard drive with drive letter. Next, the SteamTool Library Manager allows you to copy games from your Steam library over to the ram drive. It all seems pretty straightforward doesn’t it? Some of this information is kind of old so who knows how reliable any of this is. I might be inclined to give this a try, since it doesn’t seem that hard. It’s not quite the automated set up […]

Anyone have experience with this new product called DimmDrive?

I was just browsing through Steam and up popped a new "memory management" tool called DimmDrive, which integrates with Steam and allows you to run games (or portions of a game) in a Ram Drive. Ram Drives are by no means a new idea, but this is geared towards games and decreasing their load times. All right, I’m totally intrigued. As I’ve written before, my game rig is an 8-core AMD FX8350 with 32GB of ram and it’s pretty damn fast already. It has regular spindle drives with no SSD, so I wonder if I could squeeze out some more speed with DimmDrive? I’ve been reading through a few forums and I’m not playing first person shooters, but rather racing games like Dirt 2/3, Next Car Game, Assetto Corsa and Grid Autosport. There is also my new favorite, Shroud of the Avatar. Will I see a performance boost in these games? Games work quite well now and I have no […]

You really need to get over to Steam and check out the sales

Oh my goodness, would you look at all the stuff on sale at Steam! I thought the previous sales were outrageous! You can pick up Grid: Autosport for $13. You can snag SpinTires for $10. You can get Rise of Nations for $5. You can get the Age of Empires II HD bundle for $8.50. And there is all sorts of DLC and Expansion Packs on sale. It makes me dizzy scrolling through the list! Just about everything is on sale. If you need some new games to play, jump over there and load up that cart! Hell, I just picked up the Golf Club for a fraction of the release price!

It’s time to break out your wallets and head over to the Steam Holiday Sale

Don’t put that wallet away just yet, Steam has kicked off their holiday sale and there is an enormous selection of games on sale. This will run through the New Year (Jan 2) and already includes hundreds of games and will rotate through a huge part of their catalog. Lots of games in my Wishlist are on sale like Gauntlet, Flockers, The Golf Club, Life is Feudal just to name a few. And on the main page games like Next Car Game, Grid Autosport and all the DLC, Road Redemption, SpinTires, Batman, the Total War series, Nancy Drew titles, Kerbal Space Program, Terreria and Assetto Corsa just to hit a couple of highlights. The amount of titles on sale is pretty damn staggering. I don’t really need anymore games, since I’ve mainly switched over to playing Shroud of the Avatar these days, but some of these titles really have my interest. You can even pick up casual titles like Dead […]
