💾 The continual maintenance of Windows

Windows isn’t my choice when it comes to OS, it’s company decision. Fair enough, I can get around its shortcomings, except its hunger for hard drive space. It’s a decent Dell laptop, but the hard drive is only 512GB. That’s minuscule. 1TB should be bare minimum. But, there we are. After all the apps are installed, there was 250GB left. Not a lot to work with, but I’m not downloading files, creating content, editing videos, etc. The main tool is Visual Studio, SQL Management Studio, a web browser, and Jira. The database I use is 350MB, so you would think I could get by on that last 250GB. Sadly not. Windows continually caches and stores temp files all over the place like an ill-behaved monkey. And it never cleans or goes back and recovers that space. Now it’s a problem. I’m running out of hard drive space, so each week I have to check different folders to see if I […]

🤦‍♀️ Windows SpamOS 10

After more time with Windows, I’m shocked at how much garbage and spam is stuffed inside the OS. There are more privacy concerns than you can shake a stick at. The constant polling for news. Ad and news features that can be personalized, but not turned off. Tools like ShutUp10 that try and reel in the privacy issues. How is Windows 10 accepted in the Enterprise? I thought Windows 95 was cool. Like others, I think Windows XP was one of the best OS versions Microsoft made. I’m still a fan of Windows 7, although it’s nothing more than a Service Pack to Vista. Windows 10 is the most annoying OS I’ve ever worked with. With Facebook, Twitter and Google being raked over the coals for their privacy violations, I’m stunned people put up with Windows 10.

🤦‍♂️ Two months with Windows 10

Since switching jobs, I’ve moved back to using Windows 10, an OS I haven’t used in the past. I dabbled with Windows 8, but never took up the mantle to upgrade to 10. I used the tools to prevent it. After using it daily for 2 months, I find it…interesting. Some of the big annoyances: Weekly system updates that require a reboot. That reboot can take 10 minutes or two hours. There’s no way to know. And all apps have to be manually restarted and restored when finished. Application updates that interrupt work to do their business. Again, not a simple 30 second restart. It’s a slow process and every document has to be checked if it needs to be saved, then reopened manually. Giant tooltips everywhere. Not a small one with a single tip. A wall of text that covers what I’m looking at. A tooltip shouldn’t look like a user manual. Giant mail notifications. Just like tooltips, the […]

Learning Windows All Over Again

Well, this is a strange place I find myself. Six years ago I ventured into unknown territory with OS X. After using Windows for decades, I found the landscape foreign, although a little bit familiar. Getting past several rookie mistakes, I got the hang of things and found myself quite smitten with macOS. As I’ve said, I really enjoy macOS and the way it works. Now the other shoe has dropped. With the change in job, there needs to be a slight change in OS. It’s back to using Windows during the work day. I find myself completely confused by Windows 10. History repeats itself. I’m still going to use Mac at home. And quite frankly, I plan to use Windows in a VM on my Mac if I can get away with it. It will save space and monitors. But seriously, Windows 10 has me absolutely confused. The only thing that’s slightly familiar is the Start button. How times […]
