A week with Windows 8

Well, I gave it a fair chance, I’ve worked with Windows 8 for the entire week to see what kind of OS it really is and whether or not it could win me over. So far, Windows 8 fails to impress or inspire. It’s a completely underwhelming rehash of Windows 7 with one of the ugliest Interfaces I’ve ever seen. Right off the bat I didn’t like Windows 8. I like the Start bar and thought that was a good way to interact with installed apps. A desktop full of icons that you can’t seem to get to easily isn’t my idea of an upgrade. And quite frankly I’m sick of people telling me I need to press Windows-X in order to make things happen. If I’m not mistaken, this is Windows, the interaction is supposed to be with a mouse. But moving past that there are just too many thing I dislike about this new OS and I stick […]

Installing Flash Player for FireFox under Windows 8

Well this is a bit strange, I need to install Flash for Firefox, but Windows 8 seems to be against the idea. I go to the Adobe site, download the installer, run it, but get an error about the Metafile and then my download is actually deleted. I download the installer again, Run as Administrator, the installer starts, but it’s deleted again and I still don’t have Flash installed. If I go to IE10, Flash is playable. What the hell is going on here? I’ll just add this to the ever growing list of things I don’t like about Windows 8. But, there is a way to get around this – download the full Flash install. Instead of using the Stub Installer, I downloaded the Full Install and was able to get it to work. Go here – http://www.filehorse.com/download-flashplayer-firefox/ and click the Download button. This is the Flash Player 11.7.700.169 (Non-IE) Flash Player 11.7.700.169 (Non-IE). I don’t know why I […]

A forced upgrade to Windows 8

Because of an foreseen and ultimately catastrophic computer screw up I had to reimage my work machine and start over. To add to the misery of losing an entire day of work I realized I couldn’t reinstall back to Windows 7 and would have to use the new corporate standard of Windows 8. This did not make me happy. Like Windows 7, the install was quite quick (it took longer than normal because this was a custom build that also included Office 2013) and in short order the new OS was up and running. First off it presented me with a cartoon representation of Seattle and the Space Needle. Ok, now what? After starting at the screen waiting for it to do something, I realized this is the new logon screen. I thought it was still installing. Apparently the Ctrl-Alt-Delete that we’ve used since NT 3.1 isn’t there. Ok fine, a different way to log in so be it. So […]
