The WordPress.com Desktop App

As I started looking for a blog tool for Mac, I almost immediately came upon the new WordPress.com Desktop App. Now WordPress has made apps before, but to be honest, I didn’t think they were all that great. They were truly bare minimum and when it came to working with images, things went sideways. However, it seems WordPress has gone back to the drawing board and has something pretty neat and usable in their latest desktop app. Unlike other blogging tools that hook into all sorts of services, WordPress is only publishing to WordPress and it has to be a site hooked into their Jetpack service. That shouldn’t be a problem as Jetpack is free and offers a lot of useful tools. But if you don’t have it and a corresponding WordPress.com account, well, it’s not going to work. Once installed, the desktop app will ask you to log in to your WordPress.com account to retrieve a list of blogs […]

Out of OneNote and into Notebooks with Scrivner

Since we’re in the final days of the year, the tradition is to get rid of the old and bring in the new. One of the things I plan to do for the new year is move all of my writing from OneNote over to Notebooks and Scrivener. That is a big change for me as I’ve been using OneNote for nearly 5 years now. So why move away from it? – I’m still using OneNote 2007 because I simply can’t stand the UI of the more recent versions – The file format doesn’t translate well from Windows to Mac to iOS – OneNote has almost nonexistent export functions – OneNote doesn’t integrate with anything – While OneNote may be free, Microsoft is trying too damn hard to tie it to their cloud services and I simply can’t trust that – UI aside, it’s becoming bloated with useless features giving it a huge footprint For the future, I’ve decided to […]

Open Live Writer – Looks and works just the same as Windows Live Writer

As I mentioned, when I got back to a Windows machines I downloaded the very small (<5MB) Open Live Writer and let it install. As of right now, it’s a very stripped down installer, as in you don’t get to pick any options, but that’s no problem. It copied over just fine, presented the usual blog config dialog box and was up and running in just a minute. From there, it looks just like Windows Live Writer. In fact, if you have the two of them side by side, I doubt you could tell the difference. The layout is the same, the ribbon is the same, and all the buttons and drop downs are in the same place. The UI is the same from 2012 and hasn’t been trashed up to look like Windows 10 yet. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they keep it that way? I’m quite excited over this project and think it’s a big step forward that […]

Windows Live Writer resurrects itself as Open Live Writer

Here’s the irony, just as I’m looking for Blog software for the Mac, I come across an article stating that Windows Live Writer is coming back from the dead and has been released as an Open Source project from Microsoft under the name Open Live Wrtier. So, you mean one of the better blogging tools out there isn’t really dead after all? Windows Live Writer launched in 2006 and had some pretty good updates and was a suprisingly usable tool. In fact, it’s still my primary publishing tool, even though the last release was in 2012. It still works with WordPress, so why change? However, it’s been a few years and with all the changes going on, it seems only a matter of time until it stops working, so better get ahead of the curve and see what else is out there. My first port of call was the new WordPress desktop app from WordPress themselves, which looks pretty neat […]

A deeper look at Hand of Fate

The short version is, Hand of Fate is an exciting blend of Choose Your Own Adventure, Deck Building and RPG. It seems simple at first, but there are plenty of paths to choose, lots of ways to be lead astray, armor and weapons to be discovered as well as lost, and the ever present danger of running out of food. Each game is unique and you can easily devote a few minutes to an adventure and pause when you “exit” the floor, or sit down and run the gauntlet to see if you can make it. I’ve played a few hours, but my progress has been less than ideal. Sure, I’ve made a few mistakes – I’ve chosen poorly, I’ve run out of food, I’ve drawn the Huge Failure card one too many times and I’ve encountered the final test with woefully low amounts of health and ended up face down in the dirt. However, I keep going back for […]
