🧹 Massive spring cleaning and digital detox

It’s time for spring cleaning and I’m engaged in epic battles against several of my digital nemeses – old/unused apps, unwatched channel subscriptions, duplicate files, and all those damn scam messages that keep showing up in my Inbox. Looks like my email address has been sold for $1. First order of business in getting away from digital distractions is to ditch digital “communities.” This is a two pronged attack against YouTube and Discord. I started with a handful, but I’ve unsubscribed from all but 3 YouTube channels. There is a lot to choose from, maybe too much, but despite the click bait titles from content creators, I’m not watching their videos. After skipping over them for a couple months, the best course of action is to unsubscribe and focus on channels I will watch. The second course of action was to leave all the Discord servers and delete the client. Discord is cool and I used it to look in […]

💰 Some awesome deals on Bundlehunt

Time to share the love of a discounted software sale. I’ve mentioned Bundlehunt several times in the past as a source to get quality apps for a massive discount. Ironically they have an app on sale I said was awesome but too expensive – Wordcounter. To reiterate, it’s a good app, but worth $5.99 max. Bundlehunt now makes that a reality. I just picked up a copy of Wordcounter for $3, down from the regular $19.99. At that price, I snatched it up without hesitation, and if you’re into writing, whatever the style, it’s worth looking into. Track how much you write, and in which app. Very useful when the price is right. There are other great bargains on other great tools like Find Any File, which I’ve been using to find and delete files across all my drives. It has fantastic features and there is no way you can argue with the $1.50 price tag. There is also the […]

⚔️ Abandoning Shroud of the Avatar

Come gather round my friends. Sit by the fire and have a hearty mug of ale. Let me regale you with a tale of deception, treachery, lies, deceit, vanity and ego. It happened right here, in these lands, not that many years ago… Like so many others, I had huge excitement over Shroud of the Avatar and joined the Kickstarter campaign without hesitation. I was a big fan of the Ultima series, with Ultima III, IV, and V being my personal favorites. They were interesting and unique for their time, and great single player adventure games. Ah, the joys of playing single player games on the Apple II. The Kickstarter had a company startup atmosphere with the community getting a glimpse behind the scenes of the people making the game, the studio, and key players. It felt very close knit and kept the excitement going. Of course, the more people that joined Kickstarter, and thus the more money they collected, […]

🎮 The Death of Crime City

After all the heists, muggings, looting, and dirty deals down by the docks, Crime City has come to an end. Over the course of 9 years, I robbed hoods, did jobs across dozens of areas, created a syndicate, then ultimately took charge of another. I built a multi-trillion dollar empire and had so many buildings I had to tear some of them down. I’ve even seen the game pass through the hands of three studios. I installed Crime City “HD” on my iPad, almost as a joke, thinking it might be an amusing variation on the old Dope Wars game, going back to the DOS days. I figured I would play for a day, maybe two, then move on. To my surprise, Crime City wasn’t bad. I knew it was funded through the continual purchase of gold to overcome building times, but I liked the idea of playing a game for a limited window of time, setting up a string […]

📕A quick look at note taking on Mac and Windows

This is an interesting turn of events, two developers I work with bought Macs during Black Friday sales, and wanted to know some of the software I use, including note taking. Another developer, no Mac yet, wanted to know what I used for note taking on Windows because Notepad++ is unruly with too many tabs. Through sharing my screen, they saw some interesting apps, and figured I was the person to ask. I have an answer for both, so let’s have a look. For me, there are two kinds of notes, short and long term. Short term: Notes that are meaningful for a day, week, or maybe the length of a sprint. They are related to the ticket I’m working on, such as test data, user details, or something that won’t matter a few weeks from now. These notes will be committed to the ticket, so I don’t need to keep them. Long term: Notes I want to archive and […]
