🤦‍♂️ Asking Bill Gates about AI?

I had to laugh at this, an article with Bill Gates talking about AI and why it shouldn’t be feared. I skipped the article, because there is no point. Who cares what Gates thinks of technology? First, Gates and Microsoft have missed the boat on so many technologies and innovations it’s laughable. Second, of course Gates is going to sing the praises of AI, his company invested how much in it? Of course they want to use it, they get how much ad revenue from it? Getting advice on AI from Gates is like asking Elon Musk for best practices on how to run a successful tech company.

🗑 Back to the Spam

After removing myself from dozens of lists and backing away from dozens of services, I thought the Spam would ultimately trail off. Nothing of the sort. It’s worse now than ever before. It’s a slow day if I only get 30 Spam messages in a day. Some of the worst items are: The types seem to come in waves, but right now messages with these titles come in multiple times per hour. That Microsoft one always lists the same IP address and the attack supposedly comes from Russia/Moscow. The Spam attack is getting brutal, but some of the topics are straight up ridiculous. If only I’d really won that many DeWalt tools. If only I could have that many $500 gift certificates from Walmart. And come on now, are these spammers really bringing back the, I’ve got $100 million I need help getting out of the country? Should I expect an AOL disc in the mail any day now too?

⌘ Keyboard Maestro for Windows – RoboTask?

Before we get started, there is no Keyboard Maestro for Windows. I consider Keyboard Maestro to the gold standard for automation on the Mac. Sadly, there is nothing that comes close to the power and ease of use for Keyboard Maestro on Windows, but in my search for Windows automation, I’ve sort of come close. RoboTask is a close approximation, but be warned: even though it’s a good app, it’s ridiculously expensive. And I really mean ridiculously expensive. At nearly $200, there is nothing about the app that justifies its cost. For reference, Keyboard Maestro is less than $40. RoboTask, what you up to? Like Keyboard Maestro, RoboTask can automate tasks like copying files, launching apps on a schedule or when conditions are met, and moving windows to a specific location. It also has “triggers” like Keyboard Maestro, such as application starting, application closing, time of day, and device change. Plus, RoboTask can send keystrokes to an application, load files, […]

💬 Using GPT4All.. on a Mac Pro 2013

I fully admit this might have been a bad idea. I found that you could load GPT4All onto your local machine and that it was available for Mac. Since 2013 supports Monterey, I decided to give it a shot. The install was a breeze and in a few minutes I was downloading the recommended model and database – Hermes at 13GB. With that done, it was time to give local AI a try. And that’s when the joyfulness was over. I’m not going to say a Mac Pro 2013 was the right machine for the job, but the processing of my request took minutes to complete, and the result was typed out like it was 1980 and I was on a 300 baud dial-up connection. The response is measured in tokens per second and it never got into the double digits. It crawled along at 6-8 max with lots of pauses. Maybe the AI engine was as annoyed as I […]

💻 Some fun with the AI Language Model

Over the past few weeks I’ve had a great time using the AI Language Model for research and education. It’s an extremely helpful interactive tutor where I can ask questions like: Instead of wondering how to phrase your question so the search engine can find a relevant web page, seems to parse the question quite well. I think the AI Language Model is amazing with lots of topics you can explore. And in the last few months things have change dramatically. OpenAI isn’t the only game in town. AI Servers are sprouting up all over the place. There are general purpose servers, copy writing server, story writing servers, interactive servers, and I’m sure more are on the way. Of course, not all of these servers are created equal. In far too many cases you’ll need to sign up and make an account, which is a one-way ticket to SpamVille. I wanted to try out SudoWrite, and after three days of […]
