Why is Daemon Tools Lite triggering Norton Internet Security Anti-Virus?

At first, I thought Daemon Tools Lite was a pretty damn good find. It was small, usable, cheap and had plenty of functionality. I still think the program is a good one, but I have reservations now since my AV software is triggering the installer as having plenty of malware inside. After downloading the latest version DTLite501-0406, Norton became quite angry and wanted to remove the entire archive saying it had "Open Candy" inside. What is that you ask? OpenCandy is a potentially unwanted application that includes offers for additional third-party applications during the installation process of legitimate applications. Which doesn’t sound that bad, plenty of apps out there offer to install Chrome or toolbars and other things. Normally you just click No and go about your business. That might not be the end of it from Daemon Tools. Looks like it leaves a bunch of crap behind even if you say no to these offers. Looks like a couple […]

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium at BitsDuJour

BitsDuJour is having a sale on the Premium Edition of MalwareBytes. This is a pretty awesome program and I have it running on my gaming machine. The definition database is always up to date and it does a great job of blocking sites, both incoming and outgoing. With all the advertising you see on all the webpages you visit, who knows what’s going on in the background. You can’t be sure of what sort of drive-by nonsense is going on when you’re just looking for a book or movie review or song lyrics. You need more than AV. MalwareBytes is an excellent choice and $14.97 for a yearly subscription is really good. That’s just a touch over a dollar a month. You can afford that. This is a 12 month subscription, not the lifetime license that BitsDuJour and MalwareBytes have offered in the past, but, those sorts of subscriptions don’t last forever. SuperAntiSpyware, my other spyware choice, offere Lifetime upgrade, […]

Removing Google/Desktop/Install Malware/Virus

This is something interesting that just showed up on my machine. I somehow ended up with a malicious little thing installed in the AppData/Google/Desktop/Install directory that I simply couldn’t get rid of. I think this was part of MobiGenie which may have been installed as part of Unlocker. When trying to fix another problem I may have downloaded a sinister version with a payload, or the Unlocker program may be loaded with crap, it’s hard to say. Nevertheless, I won’t be downloading that again. This Google install simply wouldn’t go away. I kept getting alerts but couldn’t get rid of it. I could move the directory and drill down into it, but when I tried to remove it, I got a warning saying I didn’t have the permissions. There is a simple way to remedy this little problem. If you remember the old days of Windows NT you were a God on your machine. You could do whatever you wanted […]

Norton Internet Security 2013–$19.27 from Amazon. Instant Download or Free Shipping

It’s already the middle of the year so it may be time to upgrade your Anti Virus protection. I just renewed mine for the year so I’m already looking to next year. When it comes to Symantec, it’s not the software version that’s important, it’s the key. With that in mind, here’s a copy of Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2013 3PC edition for $19.27. Since it normally lists in the $80 range, that’s 70% for a yearly subscription. What I end up doing is buying these ahead of time when the price drops, then add the new key when the time to renew comes. Norton makes it very easy to change the subscription to a new key. I’ve been running NIS for the past 3 years and have been extremely happy with it. Symantec has done a great job of minimizing the system resources it uses. And the protection seems extremely good. If you look at the reviews from Maximum […]
