Culling out the old apps

Since we are coming to the end of the year, it’s time to go with the old adage of out with the old and in with the new. As such, I’ve been looking over my iPad and Touch and have found there are lots of apps and games that simply need to be retired. I’ve found that many apps have been replaced by better apps and in some cases what used to take two apps can now be done in one. I also run across the occasional, "what was I thinking" app… The Touch is especially cluttered with dozens of freebie games that just never got played. They looked amusing and time consuming from the descriptions, but now they’re just taking up space and need to be archived out. I’ve also notice that many Touch apps and games have been replaced by HD versions and I just don’t see myself coming back and playing them on the smaller screen. For […]

Fileapp Pro vs. Goodreader – Which is Best?

The iPad is fantastic for proofreading Word docs, reading PDF files, organizing images, watching videos and listening to audio. But sadly, one thing it really lacks is a decent file management tool. Stepping in to fill this role are apps like Fileapp Pro and Goodreader. Both are affordable and well designed solutions that let you make folders, group items together and create a more desktop feel when working with documents on the iPad. And the price of both apps is extremely low, so you have no excuse for not having at least one of them on your device. But the question is which one? Both apps support sending files through iTunes file sharing and through a wireless connection. Both support making folders and can launch external apps like Pages, Quickoffice and others. Both apps can view multiple document format types like Word, Excel, PDF, JPG, MP3, MP4 and regular text files. You can copy files, delete them, print them and […]

Is Need for Speed Hot Pursuit the best game of the year?

That could certainly be a bold statement considering games like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Real Racing and Dungeon Hunter. But, EA has a real winner here. Sure, the first iteration left a little something to be desired, but EA has rallied and given us the rest of the game. You can now play as the cops and the fugitive racer. You now get the complete package in one great iPad game. Plus, the price is still ridiculously low. So is it the best game of the year? It hasn’t been out the longest. It’s not the most original game either. But it has something; something that keeps you coming back. It creates that urge to play; to pick it up and "have another go". Hot Pursuit really has a lot going for it; easy to play, good graphics, and with the new fixes a whole new way to play and more balanced challenges. It offers a lot of game […]

Quickoffice vs. Notebooks for iPad – Which is Best?

Got a lot of writing to do? Need to organize your work into folders and want to work with Dropbox? Do you need access to the actual file so you can edit it on your desktop? I’ve come across two great writing apps that offer a folder hierarchy and work very well with Dropbox and for the most part, they cost about the same. Quickoffice offers file management and full word processing capabilities. Notebooks for iPad also offers full file management, a full screen editor, tasks and Dropbox (among others) support. So which is best? First off, Pages is also a really good text editor, but its file management is rubbish. And by rubbish I mean non-existent. Trying to handle a large number of files will drive you mad. And trying to organize documents will make you weep. For this comparison, it simply has to be kicked to the curb. Quickoffice however offers a very nice file management interface. To […]

Manage vs. Appigo ToDo – Which is Best?

Manage vs. Appigo ToDo – Which is Best? If you need a task manager or ToDo list then now is the time to strike! Two excellent choices are now available and each is only $0.99. Appigo ToDo has dropped in price from $4.99 to $0.99 during this holiday season which makes it a great deal. In fact, after the price drop I was compelled to get a copy. I already had Manage which is a fine task manager, and is also on sale for $0.99. So now we come to, which is best? As with so many of these types of questions, it depends. Manage is simple and straightforward. You can make multiple sheets and each sheet has a list of tasks. You can highlight those tasks, set the priority and make subtasks underneath them. I find it very useful, and for simple tasks I keep, this app is excellent. Manage is good for tracking errands and grocery lists as […]
