Has Microsoft lost it’s Mojo?

I find this article pretty interesting and pretty accurate. I don’t agree with everything it has to say or that all the blame should be placed on Ballmer, but it does reveal a lot. I won’t go so far as to say Ballmer has run the company into the ground, but he hasn’t exactly grown the business since he took the helm. Under his guidance there has been one misstep after another. Since Ballmer took charge, the stock hasn’t been able to stay above $30 a share. During that same time, Apple has been able to reach nearly $600 a share. So would Microsoft be better off if Ballmer stepped down? Only way to find out is for it to happen and see. This sums things up pretty nicely: In those years Microsoft had stepped up its efforts to cripple competitors, but—because of a series of astonishingly foolish management decisions—the competitors being crippled were often co-workers at Microsoft, instead of […]

And then there was a catastrophic hard drive failure

You know that old saying of always have a backup? Well, it’s good advice. I think the local power transformer exploded, or malfunctioned or couldn’t keep up with the power demands. Either way, it blew out and the whole neighborhood was plunged into darkness. My UPS devices were going mad, and since I had to get up at 5am regardless, I shut everything down. Everything was running fine, but on the reboot of the Web Server, things went a little sideways. Well, a lot sideways. The machine wouldn’t boot to Windows. I tried to do a recovery and it said there was no previous install of Windows. Then the drive started to click and clack. Then it made even more scary grinding noises. As of now, it seems completely dead. Ironically, a few months ago I was in the process of building a new 2003 server so I could update the original one. It was being done in a virtual […]

Microsoft posts first loss in history of the company

Come on, we all knew this day would come. You can’t make $8-10 billion a quarter forever, something has to give. Considering how much cash MS has on hand and how much they make per year, a loss of $500 million is a drop in the bucket. Gates and Ballmer probably have that much in their sofa cushions. I see this as a good thing. The expectation that Microsoft can keep making more and more per quarter is just completely unrealistic. If you make $10 million a year, there is plenty of room for growth, but when you make $10 billion a quarter, where is the growth potential? MS is pretty tapped out at this point. They need to ease back, lower their goals and expectations to something a little achievable and move forward. Apple has seen explosive growth, and so has Google, but nothing lasts forever. There is a ceiling for everything. I think Yahoo should be a vivid […]

The Ownership of BloggerPlus has been Changed

Well, this is disappointing to hear, BloggerPlus, the blogging tool I use on the iPad, is being spun off to another company. Seems the devs are changing gears and choosing their own path. Unfortunately, this means the app is basically dead in its current form. You can’t transfer ownership of apps within the app store. So BloggerPlus is dead for now and supposedly a BloggerPlus 2 is in the works. I assume they will continue the same code line and I wish them. However, I think that’s the end of the line for me. While this has been a nice app to use, apps like Blogsy look to have a lot more to offer – things like picture scaling, selecting dates and better format handling. I haven’t been dissatisfied with BloggerPlus, in fact this post is being written with it and my iPad 3, but the development cycle for Blogsy seems better and so does the feature set. As of […]
