Dorfromantik releases on Steam

Today is the Early Access release of Dorfromantik, a game I’ve been watching for several weeks now. To me, it’s a combination of TownScaper with a dash of Islanders. I saw Raptor play this, yet didn’t realize there was a demo on GOG. I could have been playing it all along! Curse the bad luck! Well, the wait is over. Dorfromantik is available today and comes in at under $10, with another discount for launch. Dorfromantik is a city builder that you have to plan based on the tiles drawn. With that, you try to place tiles to achieve the highest score. There are some mini quests to give incentives. Increase your scores to unlock new tiles. When it’s all put together you can watch the train and the boats go by. A Creative Mode is coming soon which will lead to some amazing works of art. For launch day, the devs are giving away Steam keys in the chat. […]

Getting started with Notion

After stumbling across some YouTube videos, I’ve added Notion to my mix of tools. It’s a versatile app that uses blocks to create calendars, tasks, projects, notes, bullet lists, ToDo lists, link between pages, tables, and create a Wiki. Notes, tasks, and lists all exist together. The top section can be free form notes, the middle can be a task list, and the bottom can be bullet items. Because it’s blocks, you can mix and match. You could create a list that links to multiple pages. You could create an outline with items that link to research topics. You can create a table with items and their due date. Each item in the table could link to a page where you store notes and research about the item. It’s a very powerful and robust platform that mixes different kinds of data together. There is no switching to your task app, then over to your outline, then into your calendar. They […]

Knowing When to ask Why

When interviewing for a new job, there’s one question you need to answer, “Why do you want to leave your current job?” And it’s a good question to ask. Not just for interviews, but for yourself. I’ve asked that question of myself for several months. It was prompted by company events and even more so after reading Culture Code and Creativity Inc. Asking that question led to my decision to look elsewhere. I kept asking: Why is Person B leading this meeting, when Person A is far more qualified? Why are we making this decision, again? It really didn’t go well for us last time. Why are we using this piece of technology when we really don’t understand how it works? Why are we adding this feature which contradicts a previous feature? Why am I bothered/triggered by this behavior? Why do I feel I’m being passed over? Why do I feel marginalized? Why does this not feel like a safe place to express my opinion? Why do I […]

The Block Editor in WordPress needs a bit of work

It’s interesting to note the block editor in WordPress is very similar to Notion. However, “Gutenburg” needs a little work and finesse. I like the block idea. It’s a great concept and will serve WordPress well for the future. However, it can be a little awkward, and doesn’t always respond the way I expect. It’s great to mix and match items on the page. This aloows a flexible layout and gives plenty of room to adapt and grow. But, there are definitely issues when editing with a “browser.” Selecting, editing and moving blocks isn’t quite what it should be. Editing links can be an exercise in frustration. Pasting text doesn’t always looks right. It’s a new approach that should mature well. As mentioned, Notion uses the same idea to great effect. Like WordPress, it suffers when you try to edit and adjust the layout. I usually end up deleting the block and starting over. I will say, I don’t want […]
