Shroud of the Avatar hits the pledge mark

I’m extremely excited over this, Shroud of the Avatar has reached their million dollar goal so the development cycle is going to start. I can’t wait to see the Alpha builds! Yes, I put in my couple of coins to make the magic happen. My name will appear somewhere in the game. 🙂 The more I read about this game the more impressive it sounds. This will be a ground breaking effort and will offer elements we’ve never seen before. Not only is this an adventure game, it’s a Sim, it’s Monopoly, it’s Minecraft. The small game video looks fantastic and it’s nothing more than a proof of concept. Ultima set the standard for the genre and I think Shroud of the Avatar will set a new standard. It’ll be a game we can play and immerse ourselves in rather than just grinding through the levels hoping to find some trinket piece of armor or weaponry to gain a couple […]

Hello MSDN Subscription, it’s been a long time

One of the perks of moving to a different tech company is that we get MSDN subscriptions now. Today my account was activated and it made me laugh to look at all the software available. Even Server 2012 is sitting there waiting to be had. I’m not quite sure where to start. Now that I have Uber machine it’s time to install the big league software. The first order of business will be to set up a lab environment. Nobody is working with 2012 yet so I need to stick with Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010. That might give my machine a run for it’s money. Just funny, it’s been nearly a decade since I last messed with MSDN. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Richard Garriott is back with Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues

For someone who played the original Ultima games while Lord British was in control this is exceptionally exciting news. Richard Garriott is at the helm of a new game, Shroud of the Avatar, which he’s calling the true predecessor to Ultima. The gameplay sounds complex and layered. Not only is it an RPG, but a Sim as well. There may be some tinges of Minecraft in there. Maybe some Monopoly? You slay the monster and live in the world. You look for riches and build an economy. It sounds like a lot more than just a simple adventure game. Garriott has pulled together a team to develop and publish the game himself. He’s not tying this to one of the established game publishers. And that’s where Kickstarter comes in. Garriott is looking for start up capital and interest. Pledge some money, get some swag, get the game and maybe even meet the man himself. The hard part is deciding what […]

Cloning my machine with True Image 2013

Now that I have my machine in a pristine state with a brand new copy of Windows 7, drivers and all the updates, it’s time to make a copy of the damn thing so I don’t have to go through that again. We all know Windows will inevitably become a bloated mess so I need to be prepared. To handle the task is True Image 2013, which uses a pretty impressive Linux Kernel. I used the hot swappable SATA port on the front of the Silverstone case I have to plug in a spare 250GB drive I have lying around. True Image sees this drive no problem so I cloned the 3TB partition to it and had the drive resize accordingly. That took about 20 minutes to make a full copy. With the pagefile and hibernation file moved to another location the backup is reasonably fast. That was phase one. The next part was to make a backup to the […]

SSD – Not for my OS, but for my frequently used programs

I previously wrote that I wasn’t sure what I should do with my 120GB SSD. Should it run the OS? Should it hold the pagefile? Should it hold the TEMP folder? Well, everyone has an opinion and no one agrees. But I do have an idea. So here’s what I did. The main OS, Windows 7, is on the 3TB Barracuda. The pagefile (all 16MB of it) is on the secondary 3TB Barracuda. The SSD now holds my most frequently used apps. I didn’t put anything as clunky as Office on there, instead I install apps like Notepad++, Firefox, CCleaner, Irfanview, FastStone Image Viewer, FastStone Image Resizer, WinRAR, FocusWriter and XYPlorer. I run these every day and multiple times a day. It makes sense to put them on the fastest drive in the system. And they do start up amazingly fast. I’m sure there will be other small utility apps I’ll install there as I continue to get this machine […]
